Drones quad copters and Aerial Photography

Can the mods set up a section dedicated to drones and such?

It would be awesome if there was a space on this site dedicated to quad copters like the DJI Phantom and other drones dedicated to aerial photography.

What do you think?

YAY - I'd agree with that, they're becoming an increasingly popular video-photography tool, one of the mods on this very forums is a multicopter smarty pants too.

It would be great to have a forum here that was more gear towards camera guys that also do aerial photography/video than the other forums that are the RC guys that have started to get cameras.

I've got some info here on different Quadcopters for Aerial Photography. Most of the Guys I know learn to fly with micro quadcopters like the Hubsan X4 H107C HD then move on up to the DJI Phantom range and attach their GoPro's. After that there are some serious kits about espectially Octocopters with advanced gimbals.

I've seen your website before as you linked to the IRIS video review I filmed (in a hurry).

If we're pimping our websites though check out: http://www.uavhive.com/ :cheesy:

I'd be happy to do it... My only hesitation (as is often the case) is that we make a new sub-forum and it ends up adding to our already long list of sub-forums, but doesn't get much traffic.

Is there enough interest (even if only among a smaller core group of folks) to sustain a useful sub-forum worth of content about drones? I just wouldn't want a semi-abandoned section with a few threads about drones.

I've had to resort to Facebook to do all my posting as none of the other video sites I use have a dedicated multicopter and related gear section. I have posted the odd review and so on here though but they vanish amongst the general gear.

This was a Dvxuser exclusive forum post but it vanished amongst all the gear but look at the love put into it. :undecided:cheesy::love4:

I fully concur... it is even a need, after all, this site is still the most important worldwide reference for indie filmmaking gear. Don't forget where RED camera project born : ) Only the fact the founder is nowadays the President of RED cinema camera company speaks by itself... Go Jason, go, there's demand for it. Even mandatory, I'd dare to say :-)

I woud love it too..... Some of the copter forums are very much about the tech and not the filmmaking side. Would be nice to have a place to chat about both in equal measure.

More so some of the RC forums are fairly condescending and hostile to video-photographers and newbies in general, too many people with long RC histories with a lot of knowledge that is totally irrelevant to current technology despite this they generally like to argue and be opinionated because they don’t like seeing new people encroach on their territory as they see it.

Also there are manufacturers on some forums with a vested interest in keeping bugs and failures under wraps, one of the RC communities most well known individuals (won’t name names here) went so far as to say some are paid (don’t know if he meant directly or that they merely have a business interest) but to argue and undermine user accounts of GPS/compass glitch that lead to fly-aways.

It would be good to have a forum where video people can air their views, experience and share knowledge.

I’ve got over a year under my belt including building a couple of my own multicopters so I’m happy to help advise where I can.

Also can the section be called multicopters or aerial photography, drone is the wrong word to use, outside the US, it's understood only in a military sense.

I'm not sure on the time scale for new forums is this a go-er? I ask purely as I'm hoping to test the 3 axis DYS gimbal this week so I'm wondering if the review is best posted here, FB or Twitter (mind you that'd be hard)....

Hi

I am awaiting delivery on a Phantom2 with the 3D gimbal. Very happy to get a forum for video people who are getting into the drone thing.

THANKS

Count me in. I have a DJI Phantom (original model) and would love to see a forum here. These are great film making tools, but there is a lot to learn.
