Drive in theaters making a comeback

Sounds like fun. I haven't been tapped into the happenings around town lately. I'll keep an ear to the ground.

There are cool pop ups for things like food, surprisingly. Well, maybe not LA, but out in Orange. I heard some friends went. They order a head of time, and then when you get there, your food is waiting for you.

Never understood the appeal of drive-ins. Bad picture. Worse sound. As an excuse to make out with a girl, I get it, but not the way I want to enjoy a movie.

Yeah, i don’t think our modern bucket seat automobiles are appropriate for drive-in’s. The old cars with a bench in the front, those might be better.

Put a couch on top of your van , kick back with a beer and it’s just like being at home after the tornado takes the top of your double wide off.

Bahahah! Good one. :)

With my balance and tolerance, i’d likely fall off. Haha

In “The Outsiders “ they had a section of the drive in theatre for people without cars, was this practice widespread in the 50s and 60s? I’m wondering if this practice might re-emerge.

I haven’t been to a drive-in since the early/mid 90’s, but as far as for just watching a movie goes, it sucked. There is the social aspect of it, but to just watch and be immersed in a movie, an Fn iPad and good set of headphones crushes it.

If you remove your windshield and drive your car into a regular indoor theater the experience isn't actually that bad. At least until the cops show up.

I tried that once, but the slope of the floor was all wrong, so my roof obstructed part of my view. But I had plenty of cupholders...

Afs or alamo or some other group in Austin had a screening of deliverance outside and you were able to paddle up and watch “deliverance “ from your canoe. Maybe we’ll see more screenings with folks watching films from their boats. Probably have more of a party feel than a screening, but still better than the alternative.

It was a blast. One or two awkward teenage couples get together. They didn't really care about the sound or the picture. It was a great night out, chatting, making jokes, laughing at the stupid movie, killing another night together. You didn't go to see an Academy contender or a Deakins movie. You went to see if Vincent Price could scare you or see what Russ Meyer was up to. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, The Raven, Night of the Living Dead, Astro Zombies, The Beach Girls and The Monster, Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens, oh, and The Terror with Jack Nicholson and Boris Karloff.

It was good for the family too. Parents could fill up the car with the family and bring all their own food. The kids could be antsy in the back seat and no one in the theater cared. Dad could crack open a beer or two. No herding the kids into the theater and hoping they behave. The kids could wander off to the play area. It was fun for everyone.

It was a much better way to have a social evening than sitting in silence in a theater.
