GH2 Driftwood's latest is Exceptional

Aquamotion v2 is the last word on all-purpose high quality gh2 hacks. It will work on your cards, span, and do all the modes (80%).

Seaquake will not span or do 80%, but eeks out the most intra quality.

Thank you Driftwood, for persistence and rigor.

Good to hear that. Do you know about how long the record times are for each of those on a 32GB Transcend Class 10 card?

For fear of being slammed on Personal-View, what does he mean when a patch "will not span"? thanks.

That the camera will stop recording when your file will reach 4 Go ish limit (near 4min on high Gop1 patches) due to the fat32 file system limit not compatible (so far) w/ very high bitrates patches. On stock GH2 and w/ patches that allow spanning you can record in one take until your card is full : 1 take is actually divided into multiple 4 Gb files on your card. Does that make sense in my poor english ? =)

I think it will be about 50 on AQuamotion v2, and 32 on Sea.

I'm going to have to try it. The highest one I've used so far is your 88mbps patch, Sage.

It is a compelling choice (aqua). It is intra, so each frame can be independently accessed by your nle, and more bitrate is distributed to capturing an accurate noise print per frame. It is stable and reliable without quirks. On the other hand, you may manage better overall image quality w/ my old fail safe, which is based on an AQ of 3, and allows significantly higher rates on average complexity frames for both 1080 and 720. That said, SeAQuake is the very best you will ever manage from the gh2, and apparently there is now a card that will support spanning with seaquake...

So.. if you don't need 80% vari speed but do need spanning, Seaquake + 95MB/s is the way to go by far. The quality is jaw dropping.

Hello Sage... or anyone else....

I've been to Personal view and tried to download the patches (ini) by clicking on the little symbols shaped like a page.

Nothing happens when I click on them, and right clicking on them just downloads the jpeg picture of the page symbols.

I'm using Chrome as a web surfer.

Dying to test out Aquamotion v2

If only the GH2 could do less banding and a better highlight roll off... It's kill everything, so far what what i have seen, all of these hacks doesn't eliminate this isn'it?

You can under expose a little bit more because as the shadows are preserved because of the high bit codec you can boost the curve back in post.

I really like how the Smooth setting rolls off the highlights. I think maybe you sacrifice some shadow detail... but I'd rather have that than ugly highlights, if I have to choose.

The roll off of Smooth -2 and Nostalgic is excellent. Furthermore, they lift up the darkest part of of the image from crushing to black. [Cinema mode has a terrible yellow roll off seen on many a video camera, and crushes the bottom few stops of dynamic rage into black. It does have an s log look, which can easily be copied while color grading smooth]

The hacks do improve the banding significantly. Use smooth -2 for top quality roll off

SIDE NOTE: It seems to me that Cinema mode, or any mode really, will give you yellow highlight roll-off if you don't white balance properly (use manual white balance). If you white balance correctly, you won't get yellow highlight burn out. Relative to other modes, Cinema gives more of the overall range to the Midtones. Nostalgic has a yellow color shift that pervades the entire range (like putting on a yellow filter on your lens) that makes it unusable for me, except in very specific situations. DPreview has tests on all of this stuff. Smooth has I think about 2/3 EV more dynamic range than cinema. I personally prefer the color rendering of cinema to smooth and I'm willing to trade-off a little dynamic range for more attention to the midtones. Cinema also seems to have slightly less noise than smooth. Once you accurately know what each mode does, it's a matter of preference.

I am a fan of what gives you the confidence to tell your story best. Shoot cinema.

I tested my GH2 today and really loved Seaquake! (Thanks Sage for assisting in another thread! Made all the difference!)

I do have a quick question regarding if my settings are optimized - when I start filming the iso reads auto even though I previously selected my iso value - is this correct for it to display auto iso or is there a setting I can tweak so while filming it reads the specific iso value I selected?

Thanks!

This is just a bug, the iso actually stays where you set it, it just displays auto iso when you hit record.
