OTHER: Drawing With Chalk Feature Film Trailer

Glad to hear the progress. I knew DWC would do well. I knew it in my gut. How did the Panasonic hold up on the 40 foot screen? You can PM me if you like, just curious because of the way the camera processes information.

We played a Blu-Ray on the 40ft screen and despite the projector not being as bright as I would have wanted, the image looked great! The second screening was about half the size shown on digibeta (SD) and still looked good. I also saw a film called 'Godspeed' shot on the red. The HVX doesn't have the detail or latitude but it looked much better than some films and was very comparable to a well shot 16mm.

In fact to the average viewer that was there thought we had shot on film. I will be posting pics on our facebook page (www.facebook.com/drawingwithchalk).

I figured they would (thought you had shot on film, maybe super 16 or 35). The average viewer doesn't know or really care about all the techy stuff. When I saw the V1U projected with it's 1/4 inch chips I was blown away, so to me anything 1440x1080p and above should look great on the big screen. But I know the panny interpolates 960x540 to create the 1920x1080 image so I wanted to know how that looked as well. My guess was from other threads that it looked good.

Yeah I'm sure the RED would look better, but the great thing is that people only watch one movie at a time. LOL The audience may have thought you "wanted" the movie to look that way. I mean District 9 destroyed the RED's image for the look they wanted - a guy I know who has a RED was so mad because the image is so washed out in District 9. LOL

wow. absolutely redicilous! good luck with all the post production stuff.
only critique is that there was horrible noise on some of the shots which took me away from the feel of the film. i didnt know why because it was shot on a HVX after all. maybe forgetting to turn on the 35 or something. but reallllllllllly sick!

Hey Ryan,

just curious as to when/where you saw DWC. I did a lot of post work after several screenings to clean up the noise (the HVX can be a bit noisey). The current cut doesn't suffer as much (in fact I had to put some noise back into the image since it was too clean).

Also, I shot in 720p (not 1080) so I imagine if you shot in 1080 the image would look even better when blown up. Still I'm pretty happy with the final print (yes, I do wish the image was more accurate with color and brightness on the huge screen but people were still engaged so I lived with it).

Thanks J.R. and Alan!

Also just a friendly reminder about our screening at the BendFilm festival in Oregon:

We screen on Friday Oct. 9th at 3 pm at McMenamins (Old St. Francis School). I'll be there so let's kick back with a micro-brew! Plus I want to get as many people I can (I only have one screening and my slot isn't the greatest but I'm happy to be there).

UPDATE: DWC was given an encore performance at the BendFilm Festival (today at 4pm McMenamins 1). Also, are screening in NYC (NY premiere) at the MIAAC 2009 Film Festival is on Saturday November 14th at 9pm (Quad Cinema) with a post party following. This is the festival that had the NY premiere of Slumdog Millionare.

Hope to see some of you there! And if you do come, be sure to introduce yourself!

Hey DCP, the trailer looked amazing.

Has anything happened on a distribution front yet?

Thanks Mattykins.

We've been contacted by IndieFlix and received a packet from RiverCoast but we will hold off until our festival run is finished (probably late spring) and then we'll see what our options are. I don't have any dillusions that a studio will pick up the film and of course the option of self-distribution exists.

The MIAAC festival had me cut the trailer down to under 1 min 30 sec. I kinda liked the way the newer one is a bit more concise and intriguing. For those who've seen the older trailer (and even those who've yet to see anything...) let me know what you think:

I'm torn. I think this one is good but there were a few good scenes in the other that I miss.

I think it's still effective but it feels more heavy on the drama side while the other one had a few lighter moments that balanced it.

I definitely agree and I was thinking the same thing; even though the film is a drama, there are some light/funny moments that keep it from being a downer (I HATE having to cut it down and I know what you mean by it being heavy). I'll always prefer the longer cut but being forced to put the trailer under the knife really sucks (that's why they pay good money to have someone cut a trailer). Now I have to cut it to 30 seconds for a PRESS CONFERENCE. Talk about a an editing crisis....

Great trailer where can i get the dvd?

Thanks sonuxxx. Once we finish our festival circuit (probably early summer) we'll have dvd's available. We are looking into various straight to video distributors and will make our decisions then. I will keep this board up to date.

Todd

ps, I will be posting the original trailer up soon.

Hello all,

Been a long time. Here is the latest for DRAWING WITH CHALK:

We are screening in the Chicago International Movie and Music festival in March as well as the Canada International Film Festival in March. If anyone is in Chicago or Vancouver, check it out if you get the chance.

Other great news: Just received a phone call from The Phoenix Film Festival... DWC was accepted. We are in the Narrative Feature Competition and will have several screenings. More info to come later.
