Drama-Fest Information

I am calling my doctor this week and putting in a pre-order for some pills. I dont know about the rest of you, but I always intend to pace myself in watching the fest movies when they go up online. But it never happens that way. I stay up all night, overloading on Zombiefest, Herofest, and Horrorfest....I know this is called "DramaFest", but I think the a.k.a. might be DepressedFest.

There are some pretty compelling themes going on in here.

Yeah, if ever there would be a time for a Hawaii bootcamp/vacation it would be after this fest is over. But, I am sure there will be some laughs as well. Intended or not :)

I woke up this morning with my old idea for a previous fest, one where the required item was a waffle, going thru my head.

One day, I'll shoot that one. :)

Why the all the waffliing? Just name the waffle Erica and shoot it.

HAHA!! jack, something tells me that if I were to give you a waffle, a cardboard box, a cell phone, and a block of colby cheese you would be able to make a fantastic blockbuster hit film.

Don't ask me how, or why... but I think it could be done by the illustrious JDS.

Naw, it was a CSI-esque piece about a gangland war between Waffles and Pancakes. A man's body is discovered with a hypodermic of brown juice sticking out of his arm. Turns out its syrup. Cops find out from his landlady, Mrs. Buttersworth, that his only kin is his Aunt Jemima, but she lives out in the woods in a Log Cabin and has no phone.....

Is technical quality going to be essential in this contest, or are the pure narrative elements most important?

well one supports the other, i think on a drama fest you need to have a good story to make something dramatic, and it doesnt have to be dialogue-driven, a good story/narration can be presented via the good use of images, angles, character expressions etc

so if by technical quality you mean cinematography, lighting, sound...then i would say they are as essential as the story

but if you refer to vfx then no...even if your movie requires some vfx then they wont make the difference IMHO

but it's a good question, as the scoring system has been skewed towards the technical side and one of the goals is to get away from that this time.

So it will be interesting to see.

This SciFi channel / Sundance contest desperatecomfort and I are entering scores the films in the following manner:
Creativity (40%)
Originality (40%)
Technical Skill (20%)

... which are a little vague / mushy.

but categories for ...
directing
script
X factor (it just worked for you)
acting
Score

....
cinematography
editing
sound design

....
optional VFX that doesn't count against the film if left blank

basically that adds Directing and X factor to the old ballot and scraps lighting which is somewhat redundant (though not wholly redundant) with cinematography, IMO. Even if you keep lighting that divides it 50/50 creative tech (it's all creative) vs. non tech dependent creative.

What about just doing it similar to the oscars or something. Best Picture, Best Director, etc., etc. ?

I know it would kind of screw the whole voting for prizes thing, but... I don't know.

You could have some sort of ranking breakdown, for the benefit of those who entered films getting to see some more specific feedback, but maybe who gets best picture is the "winner" of whatever main prize and so on down the line.

Probably wouldn't work, aye?

I like the X Factor, it would be how you overall felt about it, kinda like a people's choice award.

I don't know that's sort of what we have now. We have "Best Film" and from the score card you can glean "best score" "best cinematography" "best screenplay" "best editing" and "best acting" as an ensemble at least. So the way to do that is have the sub categories add up to best film. Best Actor and Actress would not work in that model however, as they would have to be nominated outside the categories.
