DP Show Reel

Looks great Marlon, I like the website resdesign as well - visually well constructed, but more importantly it's a simple design that's easy to navigate. I get really sick of all the overly complicated websites that just become a pain to get around, so well done there.

'The Crimes of Mr. Lowry' looks fantastic by the way, very cool. My only suggestions for the DP reel and your films are:

- Cut more of 'Mr. Lowry' into your DP reel and spread it out a little further, so that it breaks up the shots from 'Junipero' and 'Celeste' (which both have a similar aesthetic) a little more.

- And just a suggestion for your future films (which I look forward to!) perhaps you could make your dialogue a little less "flowery" (I think that's the word I'm looking for) I've noticed that it's there in both 'Junipero' and 'Celeste' and although it suits their aesthetic, I think 'Mr. Lowry' would have benefitted from "grittier" sounding dialogue. It doesn't need to Sin City-esque, just a little more naturalistic (though I appreciate you're working with amatuer actors for the most part).

Other than those two little points, I'm blown away man - you make being a one-man studio look easy!

Support for Grug. Great job marlon.

I would remove a little of 'Junipero' and 'Celeste'. IMO it is a bit anoying to see always the same face in a showreel. I think it should contain more different stuff.

But still, very well done!

I would love to but I've only made 3 movies so my reel options is a litte limited. :(

Should a "DP Show Reel" only contain footage from finished movies? If not, you could shoot some footage especially for your show reel, not an entire movie/short. Just to show what you can do.

I don't usually just shoot "for fun". I don't pull out my camera and all my equipment unless I'm gonna work on a narrative. I don't see the point of going through all the color correcting and editing without it being part of a bigger project. But maybe that's just me.

great stuff...it has a real epic quality to it. there are a couple shots that make me think 'student video'. The girl in the corridor particularly springs to mind...i think the lighting seems a little flat and it has that obviously constructed quality also the acting is a bit off which doesn't help.

I'm just in the midst of cutting mine and only have 2 shorts and a feature to choose from so I'm in a similar situation and I too am not a fan of filming stuff for 'fun'.

I really like your work, and I know you're a talented shooter, so keep that in mind through the following comment.

I think it's a weak DP reel. The reason, specifically, that I say this is that all of your best shots on here are CG manipulated. I think this is a cop-out and borderline unethical. When what you're showing me is largely fake, it doesn't belong on a DP reel - unless you're also going to give some indication of what the "original" shot looked like. I mean, you OPEN the reel with a shot that I'm fairly certain is almost entirely artificial! That's highly misrepresentative of what you can do with a camera.

This is my opinion, and I'm sure others will argue, but I feel pretty strongly about it. As a producer or director, watching your reel, my reaction is "He's an okay shooter, but really who we ought to hire is the matte painter!" Now, *I* know that you also did most (or all) of these VFX yourself, but most people won't know that. You're almost setting yourself up for failure in that regard.

However, I think all of this is a very curious aspect of a really big issue right now. Maybe the traditional definition of "director of photography" isn't enough for this new breed of filmmaking? Maybe as a "visual composer" (or something less flowery sounding) you've built a terrific reel. I would just be up front about these issues, rather than allowing the possibility of doubt.
