Downconvert from HDV to SD -- without 16x9??

I shot HDV 60i. Want to downconvert using the camera into fcp and have it be ntsc dv. When I do that, it downconverts the full 16x9 frame, leaving bars at the top, or else downconverts in 16x9 where the width is 720 pixels, but the height is not 480.

Is there any way to do a downconvert capture using the camera where I can get the full 480 height, and it just crops the extra on both sides?

Anyone know? Because so far it looks like this isn't possible with the A1, but that I have to capture and render the footage out myself, which will be highly time-consuming for this show.

Thanks.

You can shoot in SD 4:3. I know thats not your question but seems a simpler solution.

Otherwise youll have to do it in your NLE. What NLE are you using?

I hope I'm not hi-jacking this thread, but I think my question is VERY similar.

I recently shot a show in HDV & brought it in to Premiere CS3 to down convert it to a DV avi format, in order to burn it on to DVD to show the band the raw footage.

It was a slow & tedious rendering process.

Is there a faster way to do this, or is that the only solution right now?

The Sony HDV decks can do a center 4x3 crop downconversion. That's the only way I know of without having to render out via software.

Since you shot 60i it should work. 24F or 30F won't work with those decks, however.

The internal downcovert can do the same thing as well. Just set the aspect ratio to 4:3 in the downcovert menu.
