Down Conversion Help

I just ran a test to see how to downconver HDV footage while capturing it as SD 16x9.

The footage was HDV 24F

Down Conversion ON

i captured the footage, imported it into a 24 fps timeline, 16x9 project, and now im getting the interlaced lines on every few frames.

When i click on the footage, it syas its 29.blahblah fps, Not sure why this happens.

What exactly am i doing wrong? Using PP 2

While the camera is not plugged into the computer, i go to playback STD - Auto
and my HD Downconversion is ON

then i plug it in, i captured the footage, and it was as i thought, SD. But when i imported that into a 24p timeline, as i said, i get those interlaced lines and so on. I must be doing something wrong.

I assume your are using the A1? What NLE? Remember 24F is captured inside the 1080i and has to be extracted. I am not sure this happens in the SD down convert. Vegas can do this automatically in other softeware you may need to interpert the footage. Not sure about FCP. I use Vegas 7d and Cineform to bring 1080 24f into the editor the I edit and render out as NTSC DV Widescreen, either with 2:3 pulldown or progressive depending on the purpose. If I intend to edit further as SD I use 2:3:3:2 pull down. Cineform or Aspect HD will do the down conversion from the original M2T's. I personally feel better doing this in post rather than throught the camera.

That's because when you downconvert 24F the A1 uses a 2:3 pulldown instead of 2:3:3:2. You'll have to edit in a 29.97 timeline.

lol i thought so, but damnit, PP2 does not have a project setting for PROGRESSIVE in a 29.967timeline, 16x9.........

The timeline doesn't distinguish between progressive and interlaced. Use the NTSC 29.97 Widescreen preset

Well, now when i import that down converted footage, it does not have to render, however there is an issue that every 4th and 5th frame is interlaced, then the next three are fine, and then the following two are interlaced.

any ideas jade?

I checked this out myself, seems like the downconverted signal doesn't have any flags for the NLE to remove the pulldown. Premiere reads it as 29.97, and won't remove the pulldown, and Premiere 2.0 can remove 3:2 without a problem. I brought the footage into Vegas and it didn't recognize any pulldown either. The footage looks good and has similiar characteristics of the interlaced frames in 24p footage, but using a different pulldown scheme. Maybe After Effects can do the trick.

Simply extract the footgage as 1080i 24f Vegas will read the flags and mark them as 23.976 progressive footage. Edit then export as NTSC DV Widescreen 24p. Using PPro 2.0 with the Canon HDV plugin should do the same or you may have to click on the clips in the bin and select interpert footage to convert frame rate and aspect. I have PPro 2.0 but have not tried it yet with the A1.

hmm, so i guess my options then are what scannon said, or just importing the HDV footage into a SD project and shrinking its scale..
