Doug Burr's "Should've Known" shot on D90

I just scored a vivitar 28-90mm f/2.8-3.5 manual focus lens for $60. I've read they are very good. It's a varifocus lens so you can't hold focus while you zoom. But you can adjust aperture manualy which is a plus over the kit lens.

Speaking of zoom lens. I have one and I'd like to zoom into a shot...like Bourne..any suggestions on how to zoom without wiggling the camera around?

And awesome deal...ebay?

Here's a common photography stance for shooting with slower shutter speeds that may help:

Brace the camera by tucking your elbows in together and touching them against your ribcage. Angle your self away from the subject by 90 degrees to the right, so your subject is on your left. Turn your head to face the subject and almost rest the camera on your left shoulder. This stance turns your body into a human tripod. I've been able to shoot down to 1/15th shutter in this stance and get tack sharp photos.

If this doesn't help, try moving your focusing hand from below the barrel, like you would hold the camera in traditional photography and grab the zoom barrel from the top for your zoom. This will give you a better range of motion without torquing the camera.

yeah ebay. there's a few there.

Well I was thinking for a smooth zoom if you have a zoom lens with a rotating zoom ring you could use a follow focus and whip. provided it's a zoom that holds focus which mine doesn't doh!

there's also the string stabilizer andrew- http://www.diyphotography.net/just-a-washer-and-a-bolt-an-ingenious-camera-stabilizer it's like a stealth monopod.

Just found out from the director that this whole video was shot on the 18-105 VR stock lens.

Really?

I am phobic of using lenses without an aperture ring because of the 'trick'.

Can someone briefly outline if there is any 'trick' to getting the iso right for the stock lens?

yeah, i built that the day i got my d90. decent, but no tripod/monopod replacement. what i was thinking was using something like a tool to take off oil filers, and this isn't exact but to give you an idea, zoom on the lens and then use the FF on the focus...or somehow get two FF's and use it that way.

If you shoulder mount your cavision rails that should be stable enough. That's the setup I'm going with. And a steadytracker for when I really need to run fast!

Vertical, I shot this Hot Topic promo on the stock lens. It's a really sharp lens, it just not being a constant aperture is a pain, because even if you open up to it's min aperture for telephoto (5.6) and AE-L it, when you zoom out and zoom back in it will still get darker as you zoom. It would not do this if we had manual control of aperture, shutter, and ISO.
