DOP Reel

I like the color and lighting in the film with the giant sandwich and the one that looked like it was in Japan. Anything where you had the colors as really rich.

I don't know much about the red other than it's a lot easier to use than film- but a lot of the other footage seemed sort of generic. But in all honesty, it's hard for me to tell...

As a director, one problem I have with a lot of DP reels is that it's REALLY FAST glimpses of footage...I think most directors would agree that this plain sucks. We want to SEE your work...you're better off showing us 5 or 6 thirty second long clips so we can get a really good look and feel for your work. Not really quick cuts and glimpses. That won't help anyone out.

jpastuch, Is it hard for you to tell because it cuts so fast? I know what you're saying
about showing off sequences, but this is just a montage to get people's interest. If they want to see whole projects after this they can. Just trying to show off as diverse of footage as I can and not bore people.

Thanks Kidster.

that's the only one I had trouble with... the grading pushed the skintones to "pink". interesting. but not to my taste. i'm sure it works in context of the film however.

shots from the japan source were definitely the highlights for me. and the shot of the woman in the desert at the end too. I would have this DP in for an interview based on those shots alone.

if you're going to throw "I don't now much" in with a statement that seems to indicate an artist is getting a pass because of the camera they used, you'd be better off saying nothing at all.

For an editor or director I'd agree. For a DP, I want to see as many options as they've got to see if they have experience with the sort of cinematography my project demands. When i watch a reel, I'm hoping to see "my film" in there – and I need something like this to get me excited. Honestly, I'm sitting there and judging each shot as it passes thinking, "no. no. no. yes! that's what i want!". I need something that opens a door to a conversation about color and luminance, as well as the DP's temperament, and I'll request screeners of the films that seem most in sync with the aesthetic of my own project.

I like it, great work!

Matt, do you know how was the color grading done in the clip at second 19? I'm interested in the method they used to mask the skins and tint everything else... i just can't find good information about this technique.

Best regards

Exactly!

I started to watch, but by the third clip I was back at the beginning, then played thru several times with with my finger on the pause button, exactly as Zak describes. A nice variety of work, some more to my taste than others, but enough for me to consider a dialogue when looking for a DP, which is what a reel is for, right?

I thought the sound level crank on the action sequences was a nice touch but a little hot, then way overdone at the ending sequences - imho.

Nice job.

awesome work, nice reel.

the sequence with marines fighting; were the effects done live or in post? the detail is amazing! the grenade blasts definitely look shot on location, but the muzzle flashes, shells ejecting from the weapons, and bullet strikes on the vehicles seem to be much harder to tell. in any case, the effect is very realistic!

Nice job Matt. Looks good. Loved the Japan stuff. Some of my favorites from you.

treebmxrocks: all shot on location.

here is my super picky critique...

i really liked all of the stuff with the asian actors. where can i see that film????!?!?

the MV stuff at aprox 34-38sec is boring. cut it.

didn't like the pink hue in the war cemetery thing. re-grade that i think.

put the sandwich wip pan somewhere else - so it doesn't break up the romantic/dramatic imagery and the build up. feels out of place there.

the super muted blue grading on the 45rpm clips might be too extreme?? just being picky coz i like the original :)

don't like the two close ups of the guy at 1:10. cut them or replace them. i think it's just coz i don't like his face/expression :)

everything else is super awesomely fantastic and great!!!!! :) you have some really beautiful romantic imagery in there

cutting what i said and slowing the editing/pace down might make everyone happy?

i really need to put together my own DP reel.

it's important. they're both good shots but the guy just looks like a douche... and it ruins it for me. maybe i'm just preinclined to hate lead singers in tight black shirts after working with few :)

More hip and less douchey! Gotta watch out for those people who resemble douches...

Great note!
