Hey guys. I was just sitting in my room togehter with my room mate and playing
with some lights for my dvx and some of the footage turned out to be pretty nice.
I know it's a little dark, but here's a small clip and i was just wondering what you guys think about it. :)

Looks like your white balance was set to 56k for outdoor instead of 32k for tungsten... Maybe you did that intentionally but I don't care for the colors....the shadows are nice.

Yeah, I'd agree with what disjecta said about the white balance, but I like the choice to do it that way. I like the yellow/orangey look to it!

it is a little dark but it has this interesting style that attracts me to it. i, on the other hand, think the colors are as interesting as the style it is going for. the color temperature is your choice. it adds your own unique style and vision. i wouldn't get down about it. not everything is going to be white balanced or be perfectly composed, and sometimes when they aren't, they end up being better. i think this is one of the better examples. looks great in my opinion. gj.

The shadows are cool and the colors are interesting. I personally prefer to go cooler, but everbody has to make their own decisions about that. Keep it up.

I think if you would have actually white balanced this, it wouldn't have been half as interesting as it is now. I like the colors and shadows a lot. Definantly turned out nice

I like the dark moodiness feel of it. Here's a quick story idea for ya...

Hmm...Title: Dorm Life Sucks.
Storyline: scene opens with him fumbling with the notebook...suddenly stops...hears scuffle outside, sounds like a hit, obvious struggle outside his dorm room door...sounds like a gunshot rings out...heartbeat sound effect has been in the background the whole time...suddenly gets louder...next cam shot is right in his eyeball...maybe a bead of sweat slowly dripping down...scared shitless...clutches books...slides back against the wall looking towards the door...biting lips...repeating "oh god...oh god"....cam shot of door handle slowly moving....door suddenly opens...look of sheer terror on his face...suddenly his best friend runs in laughing outloud claiming it was a joke....throws a pillow...friendly play fighting ensues...gets a little too rough and careless...ends up accidentally throwing his friend against the bare dorm room concrete wall...hits his head...blood on the wall and floor...he's dead...emotional scene....suddenly lights are glaring from the doorway...his face profile slowly turns and he looks into the lights while holding his friends head in his hands...'FREEZE - POLICE'... (damn.)

or...something like that.

Heh!

Thanks for the feedback guys, we're soon doing a short as a school project
so I'm just doing some tests to be ready :)

i liked the colors. you dont always have to white balance to the proper color temp....

i think the most fascinating thing about the clip is the actual filming style (the handheld camera, jump cuts, etc). personally, its my favorite style of filmmaking ("cinema verite," if you will). i like it.

are you sticking with a similar style for the short you are filming? i highly suggest it. :)

hehe, I don't know if I'm going handheld for this project, but I have more
shorts to do so we'll just have to wait and see :)

Cool look. But what's that line in the middle of the frame? Is it just on my comp? Looks like just a single line of "off" pixels.

You are wrong! It's not "a little dark". It is perfect! I have practically seen almost every clip/video posted in this messageboard, but have never felt compelled to write about any of them because none of them blow my mind. This, however, does. Congratulations, this is an amazing feat at lighting for the dvx100 or any other video. The shadows are perfectly complement to the harsh lighting. It gives the footage a sense of dimensionality that captivates the eye. I believe A LOT of the films posted in these forums, lack good or any lighting, this includes my work also. You have shown that lighting is extremely important and have proven how beautiful video can be.
In film, lighting is essential, and most people ignore complex staging, lighting, shadows in video, becasue "its video", but lighting should be equally important in video and not just rely on available light.
Again, my hats of to you buddy. Truly great work.

"What is essential, is invinsible to the eye"

Yeah, they are teaching me lighting at my school now and I'm slowly learning
that taking your time setting up the light can really bring out the potential of the dvx.
The line across the frame appeared after i did compression.
I'm really looking forward to do some projects with the dvx when my lighting
skills is better.
