AC130: Don't run over your camera!

O.K., you get the idea.

Before Christmas, lots of dance concerts going on, late afternoon, race out of the office, get changed, pick up camera bag, go to put it in the car boot.

Oh! No keys! Race back into the house to get keys, interrupted by phone call from client, finish up in office...get rid of phone call. Notice the disc printer has jammed! Fix that, now running a bit late for my gig, race out to the car, jump in, start up, reverse, THUMP! (Expletives!!!!)

Oh God, camera bag jammed under Mitsubishi Outlander rear axle. Race into the house and out the back door. Scream at teenage son and his mates to get out of the spa and help me lift the weight off the bag.
Gently move the car while son pulls bag out. Sadly look at damage. Race to office to pick up 2nd camera. Go to gig in very depressed state of mind. How could I be so stupid!

Funny enough, after putting both viewfinder and lens covers back on, the camera still works, even the internal mics still work. But the new handle will be $700.00 and the labour probably about the same, but at least the home/office insurance will cover most of it!

Who said Panasonics are not made tough!

Happy New Year to everyone,

Cheers,

Vaughan

Hi Vaughan,

Now that is traumatic! Still, on the bright side you had a backup and the damage is mostly covered, so all will be well again soon. ( But it is a hell of a way to fix the auto focus issue!!!)

Happy New Year to you and yours.
Rod.

Hey Vaughan

Ouch!! That has always gone thru my mind too but I've never done it. That's why we have two cameras!! I don't think Panasonic will accept that as a warranty repair but it's certainly proof that the cams are pretty darn tough... Now, if you can get the insurance guys to consider it a writeoff then you can get a brand new one!! Shucks nowdays if your car gets a little shunt from behind they write that off with no question.... I would definately make sure the lens and servo haven't been twisted first!!

I know it's a bit late now for Christmas gifts but a good idea might be a reversing camera angled downwards to you can make sure they is no gear left behind the car!

Hmmm, a new car with it already in would be better!!! (WHIP CRASH BANG ...... OUCH!!!!) Oh Hell, the wife caught me writing this!!!!!

New Years Eve, time for a drink. Cheers everyone!

Great story, I did something very similar just this summer! I run over my 2 camera bags, one my sound bag and the other had my 2 60D and my 70-200 IS lens! I backed up and once I remember I left my bags behind my van they were under my axle. I freaked out! The bags were stuck, I tried to pull them out, but they were stuck pretty good. I put some boards under tire and back up on them, it was just enough for me to pull the bags out.

Amazing only a few broke items! I had some cracked filter for my LCD light and my volume nob on my R-44 was pushed in. So about $100 fix. Everything else was fine! I share this with you so you will not be so hard on yourself for doing dumb things. It can happen to anyone. :)

Thanks for sharing Firefox39. Unfortunately there's another way to look at it. They don't happen to everyone, just dumb asses like us!!! (old age, too much red wine etc. etc.). Now you have added your tale to the list I can just see all the "non dumb asses" sitting back having a laugh at us.

LET THEM BEWARE! They may yet join the list. Only time will tell!

Cheers,

Vaughan

Hi again Vaughan,
It comes with man's inabiilty to muti task I think. I bought my wife a laptop which sits on the end of the dining table. I decided to dust the table and reset it for dinner. So I put the laptop on the floor to avoid knocking it off. (have you guessed?)

Yep, now in table setting mode, stepped back to admire my work and planted a foot supporting 100gs of me right on it.! Complete write-off, so another purchase was hastily made, while my wife just shook her head at my ineptitude and added another paragraph for the book she is writing. She's thinking of calling it, " My husband is studying to be an imbecile but I don't think he's going to make it." :D

Well Rod....... I guess thats better then, "My husband is studying to be an imbecile and he is an A+ Student".

I like "my husband is studying to be a 'dumb ass' and he HAS MADE IT"!!!!!

I think we should start a club. (LOL). A new laptop sounds more expensive than my camera, but I bet it was the quickest money you ever spent!!

Cheers,

Vaughan
