Doesn't Feel Like Panasonic Cares...

Bah. Whatever.

Thanks Barry but most of the people here won't get it anyway. Trying to get some sense into them is a waste of energy. I say thanks to Panasonic everytime because I get great results from my GH1. When the GH2 comes along I will be ready to add it to my collection. Thanks Barry Green and thanks Panasonic, keep up the good work.

Theres no use complaining. The GH1 is already a great VLSR as it is, but people keep asking for more. Panasonic doesn't have to worry much about a group of people who aren't happy about a small detail of one of their products because Panasonic is such a wide ranged company. They sell things from kitchen wares to plasma televisions. Just because they have a small dissatisfied consumer group doesn't mean they'll spend X amount of cash to please them for free. For big businesses its all about revenue.

I hope they don't recall all the cameras to replace the codec, with the CEO being forced to the panel with an apology like Toyota and Nissan did

Only if that codec causes the camera to explode in someone's face...

Nikon recalled the SB-103 underwater strobe because it blew up in a couple of cases... for a while it was a pretty good deal... by a used SB-103, turn it in, and get a brand new SB-105...

This is not my battle, it was stupid for me to even post a message here, still I cannot help replying.

So? It's still defective as they fail in many circumstances. Just because the spec is deficient, does that let them off the hook?
Sure. Because you know what you are buying. In case of GH1 you don't know what you are buying.

So I take it that you're going to take this same campaign against Canon for their h.264 implementation, which uses the exact same subset of tools as the GH1 uses, and also looks as bad or worse than HDV at times, right?
They compensate codec deficiency with bandwidth. Brute force approach, but it works. It worked with CF first, now it works with SDHC. If Panasonic did the same no one would bother about B-frames. If Panasonic used a solution from a 2006 camcorder no one would have stinked either.

You do realize how ignorant this statement is, right? Because even in the GH1 itself, they offer MJPG. They had choices, obviously. They made the choice they made.
I said "MPEG-2". MJPEG is not MPEG-2.

Of course they won't. But, dude, please have some consistency here -- you know that the HDV implementation in the Z1U is a lot better than that in the FX1, right? Why aren't you actively campaigning for Sony to "fix" their substandard HDV codec for all the FX1/Z1U buyers?
I have never pledged allegiance to anyone. Sony sucks too. Is this a reason for everyone to suck?

Sheesh, it gets so irritating because here we have a thread complaining about how Panasonic doesn't listen, when they're the ONLY company out of the "big 4" that actually has representatives you can talk to! They're the company that has representatives from all over the world here. Where's Sony's representative on the forums? Where's Canon's representative? Where's JVC's? When's the last time any of those companies came on a public forum and solicited requests for what they should build, and then actually did it?
This is a Panasonic forum, hence presense of Panasonic reps, well just one rep lately. On other forums there are reps from other manufacturers. And by the way, what is the point of a rep who discounts a problem (sticky focus ring) saying it is not a problem, and who disappears when asked about another problem (9 Mbit/s actual bitrate in PH mode instead of 21-24 Mbit/s in a scene with fast-flashing strobe lights, which causes macroblocking never seen on a consumer Canon HDV cam)? You yourself quoted a Canon rep with 20+ years of service that Canon would never release a firmware upgrade. Canon did release it. What such reps are worth? They are salespeople. They push stuff that has already been designed and produced. They know nothing about future developments. They don't care about delivering users' message to the R&D team. All these stories about how the DVX had been designed with 24p and stuff, who was asking questions? Salespeople from Panasonic USA? No, these were Japanese guys who flew to the States and who were to actually build the thing.

Sheesh. Bah. Whatever.

So about every 3-4 months I shoot Panasonic an inquiry about firmware updates for the GH1. With the announcement of the Canon update I thought, let me shoot another e-mail, just to see what they say and they said (typos and all)....

"Thank you for your inquiry. At this time, there is no information suggestion a firmware upgrade is being created to address this functionality. We apologize for any incovenience.
We hope this information is helpful to you. Thank you for contacting Panasonic."

So I'm not sure who whipped that statement up, but I am pretty sure there is no update coming out anytime soon. I know we all want some added feature and I honesty think adding some smaller updates (native 24p, disable AGC) would help sales till the emergence of the GH2, but Barry Green is probably right. It's not going to happen cause GH1 didn't shake things up near as much as the 5D did.

Oh well.

Sure. Because you know what you are buying. In case of GH1 you don't know what you are buying.
You're buying a consumer camera from the consumer division, which shoots still pictures and has a video feature. How do people not know what they're buying?

Oh, you mean those folks who somehow think they're going to get a Red One for $1100... yeah, those folks might not know what they're buying.

And for those who will do a little research, I think you'd have to agree that the codec issue isn't exactly "hidden".

They compensate codec deficiency with bandwidth. Brute force approach, but it works.
So, let me see how this works -- Panasonic makes DVCPRO-HD at 100mbps, perfect intraframe quality, no goofy motion problems whatsoever, and JVC and Canon and Sony come up with a goofy long-GoP codec that has the potential of destroying shots, but takes up 1/4 of the space, and people say "yeah, but P2's too expensive, it takes up too much space, these files are soooo much easier to work with."

But if we flip it on its head, and Canon uses 3x (three TIMES) as big file sizes to get some quality, and Panasonic comes out with a file system that yes, compromises quality more, but takes up 1/3 of the space -- why, they're the devil, and they should immediately issue a recall!

Wow, it's all so clear now.

I said "MPEG-2". MJPEG is not MPEG-2.
They had options. They actually implemented multiple options. But it's only a good choice if they choose MPEG-2???

I have never pledged allegiance to anyone. Sony sucks too. Is this a reason for everyone to suck?
No, but perhaps it's reason enough for you to quit singling out one manufacturer for lambasting, over and over and over.

This is a Panasonic forum, hence presense of Panasonic reps, well just one rep lately.
It is not a "panasonic" forum, it has no allegiance to or business relationship with Panasonic, this is a community of videomakers, and this is probably the largest community for most camcorder users, and is probably one of if not the largest/most active Canon DSLR forum.

And we have at least five territories of Panasonic represented here.

On other forums there are reps from other manufacturers.
Really? Name one.

And by the way, what is the point of a rep who discounts a problem (sticky focus ring) saying it is not a problem
She never said it wasn't a problem, she said there was nothing they could do about it and people will have to work around it. At least that problem can be worked around, in multiple ways. How do you work around when your audio inputs hiss like mad (PD150) or your camera has a gridline pattern all over the footage (XL1) or your camera has a massive split screen issue down the center (JVC) or your paint rubs off so you can't even read what the buttons say (EX1)? Well, I guess with the last one you could get a sharpie...

Okay, right about here I'm gonna take huge exception to your rant. You can say this about Canon if you want, but if you think that's the way it works with Panasonic, you are so wrong that it's insane. Panasonic DEVELOPED the DVX100 because of us on the forums. Panasonic came to us and asked us what we wanted. Panasonic USA has asked us to put together wishlists of what we want the factory to build. Recently Panasonic even had me put together a focus group to get shooters together to tell them exactly what we want. We built wishlists and I delivered them directly to Jan, who is the product manager for the USA's AVCCAM and P2 handheld lines, and that formed largely the basis for the HPX170 being developed the way it was.

All these stories about how the DVX had been designed with 24p and stuff, who was asking questions? Salespeople from Panasonic USA? No, these were Japanese guys who flew to the States and who were to actually build the thing.
Cranky, you don't have any idea what you're talking about and you really, really need to stop. The people asking the questions were Stuart English and Jan Crittenden and Steve Golub, all three members (at the time) of the Panasonic USA team. Not the Japanese engineers. I was there on the original DV-L list back in 2001/2002 when it was happening. You don't know what you're talking about, you didn't even get involved at all with video until 2 years ago, you need to just take a step back and admit you're dead wrong on this.

God, I always love reading Barry crushing someone's rant. Always entertaining and informative. Good going Green.

Agreed :D

You know what does make it feel like Panasonic doesn't care? These new G2 and G10 cameras....ew.

you know its funny... with all the technical knowledge Panasonic has now on both sides of the fence (DSLR and Camcorder) why not take something like the AG-HMC40 ditch the built in lens replace the chip with the 4/3 chip and micro 4/3 mount leave the rest the same and call it a day. Best of both worlds. DOF of 4/3 with all the added conveniences of a camcorder. all the 4/3 still guys can use their lenses for video and all the video guys can build up a nice set of lenses that later they can slap on a G1 or GF1 for same sweet stills.

My 2 cents

Sure. Because you know what you are buying. In case of GH1 you don't know what you are buying.

In my opinion people who do research on these forums probably often end up buying Canons and don't know what their missing by not getting the GH1 because of the quantity of erroneous posts slamming the GH1.

And as Barry points out...no one who finds the GH1 through a retail outlet will ever be sold on it as a professional video camera?!

Seriously they're just crappier versions of the GH1 and a bulkier version of the GF1. Don't know what Panasonic is thinking right now.

HAHA no kidding...that sucker feels like a toy. I have tried all the DSLR cams now and I have settled on the GH1...honestly don't know why it took me so long. Just got it today...can't use it until I get my Nikon adapter though :(

Right. I was not here in 2001. I've read about Japanese engineers someplace else. I know nothing. I still disagree on other topics, but there is no point to argue when I am so incorrect in regards to Panasonic's reps. I apologize for stirring the can with a falseful statement. I had to research better.

The sony alpha 100 gets firmware updates pretty often including one that upped the maximum burst framerate in RAW.
the sony Bluray players get firmware updates all the time that add features and increase compatibility with the newest disks
iirc 35 firmware updates to the PS3 to date.
the PSP is on version 6.2 and a ton of features have been added.
sony ericsson phones are constantly getting firmware updates that add features.

The reason that firmware updates have been historically absent is until recently it was not logistically possible to update the bulk of the "fleet" of consumer electronics. Now with the proliferation of high speed internet and devices that are either constantly connected to the internet, or often connected to devices that are on the net, companies need to step up and be responsive to its most active customer base.
Canon is doing it, Sony is doing it, Panasonic needs to start doing it or their products will be relegated to second tier status.

Also the Sony Ps3 has received MASSIVE amounts of firmware upgrades as well. Heck my Android phone has a new firmware update every other month. Barry I must say Starshine Video got you on this one. It doesn't matter if it's the same industry or not, the point is it is an electronic and can be done.

Panasonic doesn't need to do anything. They came out with a great product in the GH1. They come out with great cameras all the time.

GH1 owners bought a camera that was not intended to be used how they use it, professionally, and understandably they are upset with some things. But really, who made the decision to use the product in a manner other then intended? Panasonic? Please...

Pana doesn't have to do sh*t, except make the GH2 that much better if they want to compete in the tiny, tiny market that is DSLR filmmakers.

It is people like you who just don't get it. Why push for a GH2 when the GH1 is an amazing camera right now. With firmware upgrades it would beat the 7d. Live monitor record,no 3.2 pulldown, and higher bit rate. That is all I care about. a Gh2 is not needed for that, a firmware upgrade could do this!

It's bad enough that a $1,190 camera that includes an $850 lens has pull-down added. That makes the GH1 seam much, much cheaper than the T2i when you think of it that way.

The problem with this though is that the Kit Lens in the Gh1 is slow and does not have a fixed aperture. How many people you know would pay $850 for this lens alone? Panasonic has overly priced this lens for what seems like Auto Focus during video. $850 I can buy a Canon L glass.......

Now with all of that said I am surprised no one has hacked into the GH1 to modify it's system. As a Pro in the audio world this is done ALL OF THE TIME. Mpc has the JJ OS and Digidesign has the Black Lion Mod. My DIgi 002 came out at least 6+ years ago and after the Mod it's as good if not better than Pro Tools top of the line Hd models. The same can be said for the Mpc-1000 with the JJ Os that makes it behave better than a 1000+ more model.

I guess we need some hackers from the audio world here now for video. Panasonic doesn't want to update simple features, fine we will find another way to get it!

Sony have said (somewhere, sorry no link) that the PS3 is planned to have a ten year product life. In other words, ten years after its release, they intend it still to be competitive in the market, by means of firmware upgrades (hopefully one will include not going ape when it gets in a muddle about leap years...) which are made available to existing and new users. Now if Panasonic had a similar plan for the GH1 I could see your point, but I rather doubt it.

Gotcha. So then the Original posters thread title would make you believe that panasonic does not care then. Seriously no one is asking for something out of this world, this is all I want.

*Native 1080p
*Controllable Audio
*Higher Bit Rate
*Live monitor output during record

This alone would bring me back to the Gh1, now if they don't care and are just going to update with a more expensive model then I'll just stay with Canon.

peace

That happens with EVERY camera that comes out. Fortunately no stone gets unturned and you know exactly what you're getting into with a purchase. I myself did exhaustive research on the GH1 when it came out and had to pass based on the compression and hoop jumping to get the 24P footage in an editable state. There wasn't really a proper post workflow for 24P pulldown removal until I single-handedly badgered a couple companies to do something about it. I'm really hoping Panasonic takes that extra time to get the GH2 right.

While we are asking Panasonic for things to put in the GH2 how about a global shutter and a clean live video over sdi or HDMI without any screen info so we could record 1080 Video via a external device

Tears2040,

So are you trying to say that the lens that comes with the T2i is better than the GH1's. Both f/3.5 and f/4.0 are slow for low light shooting. If I'm shooting an event, I'd rather have that lens on because of the 10x zoom. Having decent auto-focusing in the video is also a big benefit and I've got the videos for proof that it can work very well. Besides, the people who doesn't like it have been selling it for well for over $500 but even if $500 is all someone got, it would still be cheaper than the t2i.

Their are benefits for choosing either one or the other but all I'm trying to say is that it isn't that simple to say that the t2i is much cheaper.

Now I've been saying straight up want I want to be done in the successor of the GH1 because like every single Canon DSLR, the GH1 is far from perfect.
