does this answer the "should I get the A1 question"?

I got this from Canon support today. Is this true?

"Thank you for writing to us. We apologize for the difficulty you have
experienced locating information regarding capturing video with the XH
A1 camcorder.

Unfortunately Canon does not support Final Cut Pro, to find out if the
Final Cut Pro software is compatible with our HD Canon Camcorders,
please contact Apple.

Here is a link to the Final Cut website:

http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/

One idea you might want to try is to set the DV CONTROL to ON in the
SYSTEM SETUP menu. The DV CONTROL setting was designed to work with the
CONSOLE software for Windows XP. This way you will be able to capture
your video in the 24f mode. Regrettably, the CONSOLE software is not
designed to work on the Mac OS.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Please let me know if we can
be of any further assistance with the Canon XH A1.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Technical Support Representative"

That's not too encouraging. But at the same time I can't really imagine having trouble capturing from my A1 (which I don't have yet) into FCP (I don't have Studio 2 yet) and getting to work. Am I wrong here?

And I think with Studio 2, it simply won't be an issue, given the "any format - one timeline" breakthrough, which is why I think the Canon rep sent the link specifically to that page.

But I would really love to hear some feedback on this - especially from other FCP users who are shooting with the A1.

In any event, it's ridiculous for a major prosumer camera company to not support Final Cut at this point.

Not sure what the issue is here. Usually cam manufacturers dont support a particular NLE, its the other way around.

What exactly are you trying to do?

If its just capture from the A1 into FCP there is 1080/24f easy preset that works perfectly.

any format, one timeline has been done by Vegas and is not really cutting edge. (no attacks on views, just saying that sony vegas has some good functions).

I had problems importing hdv into vegas, and exporting to tape.
No idea what to do.

I told them I was thinking about buying the A1 and I wanted to know if FCP worked,,,24f HDV or 1080/60. That was the answer.....Maybe it is just a stupid person working!

Maybe they just mean 24f HDV . I have 5.0.1. I thought I would need a upgrade for the 24f,,,,,but I would have thought any 60i timeline would work.

What the hell is the point of this thread? That canon is not nice? People shouldn't buy an A1 because they don't tech support FCP? I don't get it.

easy now!!

My point is before I buy a A1 I want to know if I have the right software to edit.

I don't even care if I can edit 24f HDV,,,,,but I was wanting 24f standard def. I was wanted 1080/60i.
If I have to go out and buy Final Cut Studio to do that now I will have to wait,,,,this thread has nothing to do with tech support

24F standard def works exactly like 24p, with either a 3:2 or 2:3:3:2 pulldown. Editable in any 24p timeline (I tried it with Premiere and it works just fine). Downconverted 24F material is a different story. It seems to be 3:2 but there's no flag to for the NLE to recognize the pulldown pattern.

You will need 5.1.4 update for 1080/24f.

that is part of what I wanted to know. If I could edit everything else, 1080/60, 24f in a 60i timline etc. I could upgrade later for 1080/24f,,,,,

I got FCP 6 and i don't see any easy setup for 1080 24f......I see HDV 24p and I have heard of people using the ProRes 1080 24p. Is this what everyone is using for the A1?

I just imported HD:24f footage from my A1 into FCP6 using the Easy Setup: HDV 1080p24 setting. Worked perfectly.

FCP 6 definitely works with the XH A1.

I wasn't freaking out, I guess if you heard me say it, you'd know there was no hostility but it's the internet so I loose.

Anyways since you have 5.0.1 you should be able to edit 1080 60i no problem and should be able to edit standard definition 24f no problem since it'll capture the same way it does for a dvx.

So since you have software limitations it's like having a dvx and an fx1, but no combined.
