Does the lack of discussion of 60D mean anything much?

I had looked for a bunch of posts about the 60D when it became available in the past couple weeks. There are so many people wanting to shoot with DSLRs and the 60D seems to offer an
attractive production option (articulating LCD, 7D like but lower price) that I thought that might make the difference for many people wanting to buy something. There are a couple of posts on here and not much elsewhere. Evidently society hasn't been rocked.

Lots of the people here are already set up with a 7D or a T2i. While the 60D is a nice improvement over both of those in the video department, it's nothing revolutionary, and probably not even worth an upgrade if you're already well set up. That said, given its price point and feature set it probably the most attractive Canon DSLR for video work for anyone picking up a new camera (I'll be picking one up in a month or two). I'm sure we'll see more and more discussion of it as it has been on the market for a while longer.

I'll probably move from the T2i to the 60D at some point - shutting off the AGC being the primary reason. I'll have to see if my loupe setup fits...

But it seems like most of the discussion 'round here could apply to the &d, T2i and 60D; things will pick up as more users get a 60.

I'm one of those who are part of the "new" purchasers. I'm giving my non video enabled 450 XSI to the wife, who is giving her 400 XT to her sister....Nothing is being wasted.
We have several great lenses, now need to look at accesories.

partially comes down to the lazy admin not adding "60D" into subforum name, hell i bet there's peeps not even knowing about the cameras existence...

There is quite a buzz about the 60D on the Canon DLSR section of this site. I have a T2i and added the 60D as a second camera. The flip out LCD screen alone is worth the $300 to me. I can now shoot above my head and more commonly down on the ground without having to lay on the ground. In addition to the LCD screen I really like the ability to dial in a Kelvin temp for WB, more ISO stops than the T2i, the accurate battery meter and it does not overheat like the T2i.

I was so excited about it coming out that I thought that there would be much more talk about it. While there has been less than I expected or perhaps wanted, there seems to be a
lot of agreement on key points such as the ones which you have listed. I find yours and others comments extremely helpful, thank you.

having spent 5 mins with it a canon show it is imediatly apparent that the screen is better than other canons res wise

it feels a bit more jello free - thats just a feeling - not a footage analysis

sound levels are very handy

for a small RnG kit IMO this is 'THE' camera of the moment

Using a monitor and sound recorder? 7d is still king

To be honest, I'm thinking about selling my T2i for the 60D....I mean, in all honesty, it is a pretty revolutional camera for not much of a price difference; the same price you'd be spending on an external sound device, and possibly an external monitor if someone had bought a monitor mainly for ease of viewing, plus the tempeture dialing probably is very useful for lighting production for the quick go, and lastly, if it has the ISO stops of the 7D, that means a little bit cleaner images/videos. As cameras and economy is, I think everyone's pressured to get the most out of their equipment for the buck.

It certainly offers no improvement over the Mk.II, the 7D has faster processors and metal construction for it and no audio levels against it (but most of us are recording seperate track anyway, so who really cares) and it is a step up from the 550/t2i. So, basically, it's near the bottom of the list, and most people already have their DSLRs. Maybe some here have that TOO, but chances are they dont need to post much about it since it is so VERY similar to the others.

Not hating on the little guy, but it really isn't anything special.

Wait, the 60D doesn't have AGC?

You can disable it in the menus, the only HDSLR that allows you to do this from the manufacturer. Also I have to disagree with the other user who states the 60d is "nothing special". For $999 you cannot find a better HDSLR cost/performance.

This is Canons only ( latest hdslr ) camera with a flippable lcd screen. People have no idea how useful this feature is until you use it. No doubt the 7d has better sealing, allows hd monitor output, and better photography camera but the 60d at a price tag of $999 also does some things the 7d doesn't.

Being able to disable AGC is huge + the flip out lcd screen is king. Ultimately these are all great cameras and yes the 60D is nothing groundbreaking , but it is an excellent camera.

Just picked up the 60D. I have a 5D MkII and that will remain my A-cam for now, but the 60D is the perfect video DSLR. Great price, awesome features, you really can't go wrong.

The 5D2 has manual audio from the manufacture since firmware 2.03 and on new ones sold after that date, it's already updated. So the 60D isn't the only HDSLR to include this... and it wasn't the first one to do so.

Where did I mention it was the first? Secondly the 5DII did not originally do this and there are still several out there with out the firmware update. So while yes it is now included , please don't make it seem like it originally was like the 60d is.

7d, t2i, gh1, etc. all have agc.

* Finally your post had nothing to do with the topic at hand.

yup it sure does have something to do with the thread ... it is correcting your incorrect statement that you brought into the discussion. When you make a blanket statement like " the only HDSLR that allows you to do this from the manufacturer " you need to be corrected because it is incorrect.

thus I am correcting you ...

Back on topic?

The 60D was a good choice for me, I don't do enough photography to warrant the higher shooting rate or more robust body. I did contact Canon and was reassured that the 60D's weather sealing would be adequate for the worst Winter conditions I face here, which was one of my bigger concerns. Though I'd have to stop short of submerging it or dousing it with water (like in certain Canon related videos for 7D/5D) or of course leaving it in the snow overnight (which I think those 2 can do easily.) Aside from that I've got identical video performance to the 7D with perhaps a tiny bit of encoder quality under some conditions (that I have yet to see) due to the datarates for CF versus SDHC/DSXC, and of course the higher resolution HDMI out during recording. Getting the flipscreen in return was really worthwhile, I've used it constantly for both video work and I like having it flipped to the side for 1 sec 'postviews' of photos I've shot as this keeps my skin from getting oily marks all over it or the screen protector (if used.)

Your an idiot, how about you tell the world exactly what the 5d was and how it came from the manufacturer and how still there are 5d's out there without the current firmware. How about you tell the people also how the &d, T2i etc. do not have this feature? So like I said people like you are the reason threads and forums go to the shitter.... Get a life dude because you clearly do not have one

wow I hit a nerve I guess, the soft spot between the ears ... Cieloent is that you ?

The problem with the 60D, while its pretty good for video, is that it isnt a good deal for PHOTOS. Which is what these cameras primarily are. It doesnt have AF fine tune, etc etc etc....its really worse than the 50D in my opinion. So I think most people either spring for a T2i (if theyre main concern is video) or a 7D (if they like both video and photo).

I mean....why put a high megapixel high noise sensor in a camera they are pushing the video on?
