Maybe the composer has no choice sometimes, if the filmmaker likes certain previous work. " Horner, give me the choirs of Glory, plus the daring do of The Rocketeer, plus...."

The main title of Total Recall ( Jerry Goldsmith) sounds like Basil Pouledouris Conan the Barbarian. Maybe Arnold said " I vant some cohnan moosik! " Goldsmith did a little recycling of his own sometimes between his own scores.

This is interesting. I don't tend to notice music "rip offs" much.

The only time I've ever noticed one is in Kid Rock's "Only God knows why" song -- the last part is the same chord progression as "Hey Jude" from The Beatles.
