Does disabling audio rec increase rec time/bitrate?

So what happens to the space that would have been used for audio? Or does the 7D just record a silent track?

I don't know about with the 7d, but most of the audio recording I would do with, say my old DVX, audio was extremely negligible in terms of size. As in like maybe 1 or 2 megabytes per minute, and that was stereo.

In other words, you're not creating much extra space to be used, especially in a mono stream.

Yup- has absolutely no effect on video quality and negligible on file size. That memory space reserved for audio is used up whether you record audio or silence so don't bother. You can always have some use for scratch audio. This is the same for just about any video camera codec btw.
