Does anybody know why FS100 records interview in segments?

I recorded an interview using Focus Enhancements FS100. I never stopped the camera from recording yet when I brought it into my system it was broken up into 5 pieces. Does anyone know why this happens? Also, regardless of whether I am recording to the FS100 or P2 cards it never keeps the clips in the order of which they were shot. There is no true timecode. What Am I doing wrong? Is it a camera setting or an HD Log setting or a Final Cut setting? Or, is it just the way that it is?

I appreciate any advice that comes my way.
Thanks in advance.

FS-100 has a 2GB file size limit. If you record more than 2 minutes of HD footage it splits the files up because of that file limit.

Barry is correct, but FS-100 does support spanned clips. The latest version of FCP (version 5.1.2) does support spanned clips so after you have done the P2 Organize step on FS-100, FCP will see your sequence as one single clip. The new 5.1.2 P2 import window is very cool BTW...

Thanks for the info! I use HD log to log everything and export as an XML. Then from FCP I import the XML. I am new to this workflow though and haven't actually started editing alot with HD yet. If I know I have shot an interview should I bypass HD log in order to utilize the 'spanned clips' support from the FCP update?

BTW why is there a 2GB max for the FS100? That seems kind of lame. I guess though its a good idea in terms of corrupt files. If a file goes corrupt you only sacrifice 2GB instead of potentially 20. Is that the idea behind it?

Any idea why there is no rhyme or reason to the order of the clips? Why they wouldn't show up in sequential order?

Thanks again for the replies.

FS-100, like a P2 card, is formatted as a FAT32 volume. FAT32 was originally selected due to its ability to mount easily to both Mac and Windows based editing systems. FAT32 has a maximum file size of 4GB (or in the case of FS-100, 2GB). FS-100 is a development of other FireStore products which also used the FAT32 disk format. The 2GB maximum size was originally chosen for DV25 support for legacy Adobe Premiere projects as well as other NLE systems. We have stuck with FAT32 and our 2GB max file size on FS-100 for overall system stability as well as the reasons you mention.

Files should remain in sequential order after Organize P2 has been done. It is possible that the P2 Log application may be changing the order perhaps and I am not sure if it modifies the spanning clips feature, but as I have not used P2 Log, I do not know. Maybe someone who has can jump in here.

Hope that helps,
Matt

Once you upgrade to FCP 5.1.2 you probably can cut HD Log out of your workflow totally, and will span your clips really nicely.

I also find files come in "un ordered" sequentialy until I do a Project window sort on the in point timecode. I feel it has something to do with the naming protocol of the clips.

I like the HD Log primarily because I can log in it and only create movie files of what I want to keep. But it does not seem to keep the files in sequential order. It probably is because of naming protocol. I'll try the Project window sort.

Thanks for everyones reply and also, thank you BenB for the tutorial.

I can do the same, importing only the clips, or parts of clips I want to keep, with the FCP 5.1.2 P2 Import window. In fact, this morning, I had a long clip but only needed two small segments of it. Set my in and out points, import, set new in and out poinst, import, so I have two small clips from the really long original, and that really long original I never imported at all.
