It's difficult to watch something that caused so much pain. The same with the
riots in LA, or other difficult moments in our history. It is what it is. Good luck
to you. Documentary isn't an easy field, but somebody's got to tell the story.
It's important that this sort of footage is captured and preserved. In the short term, it heightens awareness of the disaster. In the long term, it becomes part of the historical record.
It's also inspiring that a person can take his DVX100 (not an A or B, mind you), shoot 6 hours, self-edit the material, and a few months later have a DVD for sale in Walgreens. Well done!
im not anyone to tell you what is right and what is wrong about the content.
however, i applaud you on how far you have come with this doc of yours. it really says alot to the indie community, as sean said, anyone can do everything in their own home and get a distribution in nationwide chains.
Congrats on getting your film out - hope it leads to more projects in the future. From what I saw on the website I don't see anything exploitive about the project. Hope the fundraiser is a success, too!
ronbo - my intention is to be skeptical of your project, not to insult you. i presented my reaction after having seen only what is posted on the website, and it's very possible i misinterpreted your work, particularly considering that you didn't design the website. it's great that your film has distribution.
that said, i still wouldn't be happy to see someone selling a dvd with my destroyed house being presented as "exclusive footate." i wholeheartedly agree with sean michael that this tragedy needs to be thoroughly documented. and it surely has been. but there is a difference between documenting something for the sake of history and trying to sell "exclusive footage" of people's destroyed homes. a big difference. please understand that my intention is not to be insulting to you. i'll just keep my mouth shut next time.
I would like to enquire about your marketing company you used, i might be interested in getting them to market documentary I shot/edited on Starbucks, thanks and congrats on your sucess i know how you feel no matter how small it may seem to others.
Cmostech I didn’t use the marketing firm it was the other way around. I was contacted by them to shoot this doc. The concept belonged to them. I produced it as a work for hire. They did pay me for my time and promised residuals.
I know that this is an experiment for them and a departure from their usual business. I think if it pays off for them they will be interested in more projects that fit into their distribution channels. In which case they may be interested in your doc.
In any case they like to have a lot of control over the final product. I would have done my doc differently but, I may not have gotten any distribution. So it was a good trade off.
What is the twist on your Starbucks doc? And what is the deal with your member name cmostec do you use a cmos cam? Do you work on cmos chips? Are you a cmos developer?
I just bought a cmos cam to play with I thought I would check it out and see if I could use the HDV format. I am still not sold on P2 for docs and commercial work.
My name actually is my name i used for all username accounts it was first meant to mean computer tech but now i use it for all my username and i guess it fits well with the cmos chip thing. I use a 100B, nothing special about the name just sounded cool to me. And the Starbucks documentary is a documentary on the influence Starbucks has on society mainly new york, with interviews of owners of independent coffee shop owners and street interviews, as well has the mayor of Baltimore and other Starbucks related people.
