do you prefer a shoulder mount or cage with handles for handheld?

One thing to consider is that a proper shoulder mount with counter weight or some sort of front body support will allow you to shoot for longer without your arms getting tired. Also, since a shoulder support has a bigger distance between your pivot points, and your shoulder is a very stable source, a shoulder mount will in theory allow you to get more stable footage with more zoom in your lens. Also, if you decide to go the matte box/follow focus/coffee machine/kitchen sink route, you won't want to be holding that in the air with just your hands for very long, and focus pulling will be more difficult.

The downside of a shoulder mount is that if you want your camera at any height other than your shoulder, it is much more difficult, and if you are walking around with it, it is very hard not to see the up and down of your body. These are areas where a cage has significant benefits.

So, what are you going to be shooting? That will determine what works best for you.

I just finished my rails/cage/shoulder mount/can opener/boom box/circular saw rig. Working on the MB and FF right now!

Sure.
