Do you need 3rd party softwayre to convert to AVI?

I use Vegas, so Raylight seems like the obvious choice. I was just wondering though how to convert to AVI or QT if I did not have access to those programs.

Maybe a better way to phrase the question is, if you have no software at all, how does one convert from MXF to an AVI or MOV?

One doesn't.

You need software to perform any given task, whether it is writing a letter, browsing the Internet, editing video, or converting between different media file formats.

If you don't have the required software, you need to get it. In the case of Vegas, Raylight is an excellent choice because it allows you to continue to use the tools you are already familiar with. Other NLEs like Avid, Edius, and FCP can do it without third-party software, but why give up Vegas just for their ability to handle P2/MXF if that's the only functionality you are missing?

I think the point is that mxf files are supposed to be universal.
from wikipedia:

"MXF has been designed to address a number of problems with non-professional formats. MXF has full timecode and metadata support, and is intended as a platform-agnostic stable standard for future professional video and audio applications."

The thing is, just like with p2, Panasonic banked on the future, not the now, and editing software manufacturers had to play catch up. Either way, just like with anything else out there you have to think about your work flow. There is a solution for pretty much every major professional editing program at the moment.

It also doesn't help that some have created their own proprietary form of MXF (which pretty much defeats the purpose OF MXF).

Was the topic, here my answer:

Yes, there are several pieces to do that.

Personally I prefer Aspect HD or Prospect HD from Cineform, I found it to be the best solution/compromise I found.

1.- let me use my Win XP - AMD XP - 1 GB RAM - 250 GB HD machine, with no problem at all.

2.- Makes my life easy in the way that I don't have to deal with twin archives, copies and lost folders with original footage.

3.- Does the work for me in bath process.

4.- USes about 1/3 the storage needs than MXF and about half the resources.

5.- and the best that everything: works fine in real time in my old good Premiere Pro 2.0 ( I just get CS3, hanven't try it yet)

PS: I have made 6 long and short features, blown up to 35 mm, no problem.
