Do you multitask while rendering?

After you start a render do you then go and do other things on your machine or leave it be?

I tend to leave it be, maybe jump on a different machine or my phone or something. I even once considered starting a podcast called "Render time with Mike" where each show starts with me hitting render and then lasts as long as the render takes. Though I've had some overnight renders, so there would need to be another cap. lol

I know computers are fast and efficient these days, but I still have it in my head that multitasking can potentially create a glitchy video. It's happened to me in the past, though I don't remember when the last time was. Could have been 15-20 years ago for all I know.

If it's a really short video I can rerender quickly, I will multitask, but for anything longer or with a quick turn around I'll leave the machine be. How about you?

Do other things on other programs and make sure not to write on the drive I am rendering on. I also have multiple computers and can do that on each at the same time. It allows me to work on many projects at once if needed. Its a requirement with my production schedule.

Correction: the only time I do not do anything else is when I am rendering a company/client approved master video that is high res (4k and up). I usually do that after I am finished for the day and run the render after work since it can take hours.

I do light stuff. Web surfing. Writing. Listening to podcasts. Nothing graphically intensive.

I think the same way and I have never mentally been able to get past it.

Just like changing media in cameras that allow hot swapping (I have to shut the camera off first)...or I shut them off when changing lenses (even manual ones), or plugging & unplugging any cables (HDMI, XLR, 3.5mm), or I have to reformat a card twice in a row before using it...

...and many other OCD-like crazy behaviors.

I even have trouble being on a computer that's uploading or downloading a large file.

I worked with someone who used to multitask heavily (edit while batch processing, listen to music, have various pages open, upload files), and I've never seen anything fail.

I don't know.

I leave my computer alone while rendering. Too many things can go wrong trying to multi-task. Not worth the potential disaster. I just go play on my phone during render times.

I "multi-distract"... I've rendered so many flipping videos while surfing the web, watching a youtube video, hanging at DVXuser, or what have you and never had a glitch. Well, not since like wayyyy back in the day.

I have 64gb of RAM in my desktop though so maybe that's something.

I don't think I'd have many posts here if I didn't! ;)

That is why I paid up for the 10-core! Like the others, I do normal stuff that would not involve major disc or CPU activity. But when it comes to burning a master DVD or BD I do not do anything.

I guess I am officially old. Plus I can't multitask when they are burning, so two strikes! I guess I could but old and afraid...

I still have to burn DVDs as well. Recently had to make 25 of them. Individual menus for each. My new boss is and older gentleman that likes to have a disc he can take home and play in his DVD player or easily hand to someone else.
Personally I'm right there with him. I like physical discs. I wish blu-ray and UHD blu-ray were as widespread as DVD is but that's a whole other topic.

Lol, I grew up mastering those discs and around 6 years ago just took it off my services as an option

I hate non digital delivery! I’m just surprised 1 clients are still asking and 2 you’re still offering!

I did have one client ask 2 years ago and I provided digital with instructions on how to make their own dvd - ha!

It always cut into profits more than I’d want, always require some hassle in connecting with people, and often cause some headache of I don’t like the menu. The chapter placement. The label. It won’t play in my DVD. Actually can we make one change and then need a new disc. Etc. while my agreement officially protected here it was just a customer service nightmare for me.

I picked up the productivity habit of doing ~45 minutes at the computer, then leaving it to go do ~15 minutes of anything else (short walk, my wife, reorganize gear, fix something broken, whatever). Avoids sitting about the computer halfway-faffing on something not really very productive blaming “render slowdown,” and prevents screen burn-in in my brain. I’m getting way more done this way, might just suit my raging ADD.
