Do you guys like the P2 store?

I can see why a P2 Store is quite handy in run-and-gun situations but for larger shoots I'd definately use P2 Genie (obviously) for offloading cards. Maybe a small 12,1" tablet PC would be sufficient for that. A tablet PC in the utility apron would look kinda cool wouldn't it ;-)

How do you guys transport the P2 Store in the field (as a one-man-crew).
A Porta Brace C-P2STOR or...?

Does actually someone use the P2 store with 8 Gb P2 card since nobody seems to know the answer !!!!

if you use a 8 Gb P2 card you are not able to use the full capcity of the P2 store .
7 off loads = 56 Gb what abot the 4 Gbleft???????

WHy are you guys making it out like everyone has a giant laptop? I have a little Dell 710m I use to dump, it is smaller than most production books and the battery lasts 5 hours. With the built in 100GB HDD, I have well over 60GB free at all times and the kicker? I paid less for it than for a P2 store. I have been using P2 Genie and shooting remotely (I shot a music video LITERALLY in the middle of a river) with no issues. This whole spin of a laptop needing to be used in a studio is silly. I see it like this...

P2 Store:
- completely idiot proof
- Panny support

Laptop:
- WAY more value for the same or less money (you can get an EDITING machine for the price of a P2 Store) my system has 2gb ram, 100gb HDD, DVD dual layer burner, etc.
- Faster than a P2 Store
- potentially holds more footage, lots more if you hook up an external OTG drive, my combo which altogether costs less than a P2 Store, holds 180GB (includind OS, etc. so really more like 160GB for dumping)
- capable of redudant back-ups (using a portable external HDD) in the field
- can be used to VIEW clips on set/in the field
- combined with P2 Genie, it is completly idiot proof

IMHO, in most every case, the development of P2 Genie has rendered the P2 Store pretty pointless. Like I said, sure it is smaller than a laptop but most shoots a small 12.1" WS laptop wont take up any more room than a production book binder. For P2 store to be viable, it needs to INCLUDE a screen to view footage, be faster and hold more data.

PS one of my buddies is using this TINY $899 laptop to offload P2 cards. At only 3.5lbs and smaller than many books, the size argument goes out the window. He says it cant really play back footage smoothly at full rez but still has 80gb and a DVD/CDR combo drive!

You know Ash I think you turned me with that last post. I was always thinking P2 store but even though I'm a mac user I'm willing to get a cheaper laptop where I can view clips, use the P2 viewer that came with the camera and not have to go the P2 log route too. Any recomendations for cheap laptops that you can view and watch the clips smoothly without a problem and has a pcmcia slot?

I think both have their place...and I prefer the laptop for controlled narrative type shooting in a studio or location where things are setlled and I can view the clips and edit. However, I personally couldn't imagine bringing my laptop into some of the locations I've had to shoot. Running all over a dusty dirty race-track... Jumping in and out of boats... Skateboarding along with camera in a backpack... Running around a medival festival...

The P2store is easy to deal with... reliable.. rugged and easy to get the job done... especially when I'm a one-man-band.

I also remember reading a while back that it will be possible to change out the harddrive on the P2store.. if it burns out, or to accomodate the larger cards... So maybe when the 16 gig cards or 32 gig cards are in circulation... there will be the abiltity to insert a 250 gig drive or something like that...

I've used the Firestore and that was a shaky experience. So, when is the Cineporter due out?

Agree with Justyn.

The P2 Store is the way to go when ur runin and gunin by urself.

I love mine and don't need to feel like I have to check it or worry about it.

IT JUST WORKS. The wiping of cards is automatic and I can spend more time working with my talent or capturing the event.

Plus I don't have to hire a 1st AC everytime I am out of the studio which means more money for me. :)

Any laptop that is 2.0ghz or higher will play back even 1080 footage. Why would you need an extra person to run a laptop? Do you guys understand how P2 Genie works? It can be set-up to basically autorun when a P2 card is inserted, no more work than a P2 Store, it can be set up to wipe the card as well.

For the record, I like the general idea of the P2 Store but the price versus value is silly. I would like to see a 200GB version with playback/deck capabilities for $1500. For $1500+ right now you get a glorified PC Card reader and a 60gb HDD...

Also, I edit with FCP, I just use the PC laptop to dump too and dump (at the same time) to a Fat32 external that any Mac can read.

The key statement was "Run and Gun". Portable PC solutions do not lend well to on the go shooting when u can't stop and set up a laptop and I can agree with Justyn that I often find myself on the local lakes here or like last week out in the desert filming a fall off a cliff. Not easy to setup a card table and use my laptop. The P2 store is usable in every ENG situation that can come up.

Thanks Jarred, that was my question a while back. So it is not possible to transfer a half filled 8 gB card to the p2store to complete the 60G ?????

P2store is my firts choice.

If you use 8gb cards you loose that 4gb.

no.. as soon as you put a 8gb card in it it puts aside 2 partitions.. so if you put a 8gb card in even if it only has 2gb on it it will take the full 2 partitions.. it wants to make sure each drive is an exact replica of a card.
