Do we still need Audio mixers?

I'm re-thinking my system under v5 and would love to free up the space on my workstation by ditching my mixer. I am 100% file based capture at this point. If a client has archive footage- I have the MojoDX that I can feed my sound card if i ever get the need to capture tape. Do I really still need my Mackie?

I suppose it's nice to have it there just in case- but what is the latest trend in new workstations?

I still have my Soundcraft 328 digital mixer, but these days it's only pulled out for monitoring when recording a band - everything else is done "in the box".

Every post house with an edit bay has a mixer. Well at least everyone I've seen. But who cares about trends. What do you need. That's all that matters.

I have two Avid suites and have never hooked up a mixer. I have a friend who also has two MC suites, he always used a mixer. I always argued that it was better to take the tape in at unity (without mixer) that way if you ever had to rebuild the project the tape would come in at the same sound level as before. With a mixer who knows where the fader was, if eq was applied, etc.

File base, makes it even less relevent, IMO.

In these post houses they don't record through the mixer for the eq or anything like that. They use it all for monitoring many things. If you've got a small setup then might not be necessary.

But as for recording through it through the mixer we don't record analog. Everything is HDSDI in or digital.

Like I said, at the post houses I work at they still use mixers. It is an important staple in a bay. I'm talking big companies like 50 to 60 Avid's in one for example that I do work at. They all use it for the purpose of monitoring the decks and such.

On another note if you had to record analog it is not a problem because at a pro post house or mixing house anyone who is trained would know not to add any eq to an input and do and to set their tone levels at unity with 1min of bars and tone. But that's not an issue anymore because like I said we record all digital.
