Do we have to lug a laptop around?

Okay, I get the point that we can use a laptop to stream the video or use the P2 cards and dump the footage down onto the laptop. But here are my 2 questions:

1. Can you just get an external hardrive, plug it up to the firewire port and dump the contents without using a laptop? And can you be dumping video from one card while recording simultaneously with the other?
I want to be dumping video off of a P2 card while still recording and do it without even taking it out of the camera's slot. Is this possible? Jan can you fill me in?

2. If you have a PC laptop, but edit on Mac, can you dump video onto the laptop and transfer it to the Mac edit station back at home?

1) You CAN dump directly from P2 to an off the shelf FireWire Hard Disk without the use of a Laptop. This has been confirmed, and is one of the BEST things about the HVX.

Not sure about dumping from one card while recording onto the other one. I'm guessing you can't, but don't take that as fact.

2) Don't know.

Yes -- not firewire, but USB2.

No.

No. The camera has to be turned to VCR mode to dub/offload P2 cards to a drive.

If you want to continue shooting while copying the files off a card, you'd need either a laptop, or a device like the P2 Store (a standalone hard disk unit that has a slot for a P2 card and automatically copies the contents of the P2 card on to the hard disk). You would have to swap cards in either situation.

Thanks Barry. I like the idea of P2, but with wanting to do live events in HD, I'm just going to have to wait until thos P2 cards get higher capacities, and of course, lower prices.

Your piece of choice should be a forthcoming new firestore thinggy you can connect to the firewire port of the HVX200 to record your video in HD continuously onto its hard disc. Maximum recording time depends on the capacity of the hard disc. An 80 GB disc provides for appr. 80 minutes recording time. Doesn't that sound good to you? :)

Also, why won't the camera dump the video from the firewire port and only USB2?
Don't know. That's just how I remember it. It's my understanding that it does file transfers via the USB2 port, and streaming via the firewire port, and that it doesn't work the other way.
