'Nuff said.

As someone who has never smoked a cigarette, I can speak authoritatively on the subject.

That's one of the dumbest studies I've ever encountered.

Well, the outcome of this study sounds plausible to me:

The findings suggest that lower IQ individuals are more likely to choose to smoke, rather than that smoking makes people less intelligent, Weiser and his team conclude.

I agree that's plausible... as you could suppose any negative choice in life could be proof of a lower IQ... but there is always the factor of social IQ.

One could argue that in some cases smoking began as a conscious decision. There are a few "memories" I've missed out on because I was so anti-smoking... and I sure wish I had been "smarter" at the time.

Still... if I were a betting man... and I am... I think addictions generally hit lower IQs hardest.

But then again, there will be more time for you to have more memories, and I dont think all the extra ones they get are that worth while.. ie coughing up, food that has no taste, hospital visit with your crying family around you, dirty looks from everyone around you in public places where people just want to have fun and breath "fresh" air.

*shrug* so not only is your average smoker more likely to be a dumbass, he's more likely to be an unproductive dumbass.

But what if that smoke break helps this worker clear their mind a bit, and when they get back to work they are more productive because they were able to take a moment away from their desk or workstation to decompress for five minutes?

Not that everyone will be this way, but for some people (myself included) it is good to take a breather sometimes and come back to something with a less stressed mindset.

Also, knowing that you get that cigarette break at a certain time everyday can be a nice little motivating factor in getting things done so you don't have to skip your break to stay on schedule with your work. For some people it could possibly make them a bit more efficient than if they weren't allowed a smoke break at all.

Now the dumbass part, that's gonna need to be determined on a case by case basis.

a smoking debate is just as boring as a political one. but i guess we can talk smoking here. i just had nothing clever to say.
