I'm still not sure about the slave thing. Seems like it wouldn't have much to do with the rest of the themes.
I think a more interesting fall from grace would be if Padme wasn't interested in him at all, but he fell in love with her. Then out of jealousy he'd use his jedi skills to start manipulating her, and that would be the start of his fall into corruption.
Hell, maybe there could be a love triangle between anakin, obi-wan and padme or something. That'd be more relevant to the characters than Anakin being a slave.
But I wouldn't buy that character transition. For someone to become as evil and sadistic as Vader was in episode IV-VI...there needs to be a stronger bedrock for his anger/fear, more than just being rejected by a chick. The slave thing isn't relevant to the story as is, but I'd junk most of what Lucas did anyway. Maybe start with Anakin leading a slave rebellion. Lucas was attempting to do something requiring far more nuance than he is capable of. The OT works because of its simplicity, a rebel uprising against an oppressive Empire. We don't need to know the politics of that repression to sympathize with the rebels. It's set up in the crawl and we're off to the races. A drama set within a crumbling republic, a character's moral corruption, is the stuff of Shakespeare. Lucas ain't no Shakespeare.
