Do I need to install software to transfer footage from P2?

I have an older computer and I recall installing software on it for my HPX-170 when I bought it. Indeed there is a "P2" icon in the lower right corner.

I purchased a new fast computer and I did not install any software related to my camera. The camera still transfers footage just fine and I can import it into Premeire and edit just fine too. Am I doing anything wrong?

Also the footage transfers fairly quickly. A 16 GB P2 that is full (14.5GB) transfers in about 10 mintues. I thought it was supposed to be slower than that. I'm not complaining, just wondering if I'm missing something.

What does that P2 software that I installed on my first computer actually do? Is it not necessary if I only use one P2 card? (E series is what I have.)

I don't think he's using a Mac if he's describing the P2 icon as appearing in the task tray.

The P2 drivers allow the OS to communicate with the P2 card, and in Windows, allow for things like formatting the card with the proper file structure.

I've always used PCMCIA slots to transfer footage, so I've never actually used the specific camera drivers, but I'm surprised the computer even recognizes the card without installing drivers.

Can you format the card from the computer? Strange.

It's a PC, using USB 2.0. My computer recognizes it like an external HD and I just drag and drop. I also bought a netbook and it works just fine on there. I timed both. 10 minutes, 20 seconds on the desktop PC, 10 minutes, 40 seconds on the Netbook (Asus)

I kind of racked my brain out figuring out how much faster the Lenovo S10 with the adaptor setup would do it vs. a regular netbook. (I've posted a lot on here about the subject) I finally just took my camera to the store and plugged it into the netbook and it worked pretty quickly.

Can you format the card from the computer? Strange.

I'm kind of afraid to. Don't fix it if it ain't broken!

I missed the clue. Sorry. Couldn't look over his shoulder.

:)

It would be prudent to let us know the details of your hardware initially.
