Do fireworks/firecrackers cause damage to the sensor?

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a little insight on whether or not you think fireworks, firecrackers and such would cause damage to the sensor? I will be using a T3i and it would be pretty close to the blast. What I am hoping to accomplish with this is to capture my own shots that would resemble muzzle flares and use them as such later on. With that, I would want to do this at night to get the best contrast for keying out the rest of the shot. Any thoughts would be great! Thanks.
 
Like Martin said. Think of it this way- you don't launch fireworks during the day because no one can see it. Why not? Because day light is that bright. You're not going to damage your sensor any more than you would be shooting in broad daylight.
