C200: Do Diffusion Filters Mess with Dual Pixel Autofocus?

Has anyone tested this? I have a C200 shoot coming up and the director wants to use light diffusion (Tiffen Black Satin) but we have a few scenes where DPAF would totally save us in a run and gun location. Just concerned that the diffusion filters would cause AF to freak out. This would be a mix of Sigma Art and Canon L.

I haven't had a problem. In addition, the Black Satin has almost no visual effect on micro contrast. It shouldn't be an issue.

Zero issues so far with a Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4 on the Canon 50 1.4 and 24-70 F2.8L II (both wide open). C300 II and 1DX II DPAF. Best to test first under similar conditions to be sure.

You can also achieve diffusion effects in post giving you more flexibility for the final look. Some examples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TQwmMMJMME , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MjslHdnqJk . The basic concept is blending a blurred copy with the original. You can tune look by selecting blur type and amount, blend mode, blend amount, and so on. Can be done with full GPU acceleration on PP CC, FCPX, Resolve, etc.

Haven't used this plugin though looks decent (has a free demo) and has a lot of built in effects/styles and does a lot more than diffusion effects ($595): http://digitalfilmtools.com/dft/

From initial testing I'm pretty happy with simple blur & blend techniques vs. using the physical diffusion filter (gives a lot more control in post). That said, there may be specific effects being looked for that only a physical filter can (easily) achieve and thus testing is important.

I have used Black Pro Mist 1/4 and 1/8 and had no issues on the Sigma Art 24-105 and 18-35.

I did have some issues when I used a Hollywood Blackmagic 1 in a full matte box with my 18-35 but this was prior to a firmware upgrade for the lens that I think helped. I would definitely test the filters first to confirm but I think if you're staying in the 1/8 - 1/2 range with your level of diffusion, you should be fine.
