DLSR for event videography gigs

"the cinematic styling of shallow DOF and being able to isolate people for emotional emphasis and make movie-like memories for clients has really allowed me to separate myself from the pack."

Combined with the other advice explaining to client you might not capture every minute, I applaud your effort. Some clients might prefer fewer, more appealing/atmospheric moments as opposed to video by the ton. It's great to have different approaches available.

People started shooting on DSLRs because you can't beat the DOF at that price. It's very challenging shooting before even thinking about tackling the audio headaches. If it works for you, and you're up for the challenge.. go for it.

Depends on the event. I shoot weddings for a San Francisco based wedding company and we use DSLRs entirely. We focus on creative, story driven pieces so the cinematic look certainly outweighs the other issues that are involved with shooting DSLRs for events. Dealing with the audio issues wasn't too bad, with tools like Plural Eyes and the handy dandy Zoom H4N sound recorder, we run a pretty mobile video crew.

Just did in-house shoot for a red carpet event, we ran 2 T2is and then we had an HVX200 for interviews (we were supplying supplementary soundbites for broadcast same night so the HVX supplied high quality video and great audio via XLR ports). great overall coverage, mix of UWA and tight shots with primes gave a really interesting feeling and content. Love those little cameras.
