Thanks for the reply David. That's about what I expected. Not to generalize, but that's the 'Achilles heel' of many Chinese companies. But I think they are slowly getting better.
I am wary of spending that kind of dough and not know what to expect. Sounds like there are some horror stories, but overall consensus seem decent enough.
DJI seems to be a leader in this segment rather than a company selling cheap 'knock-offs'; so there's assurance in that.
Their products are fine. I engineer and build everything I fly for better results and also because I'm a nerd, so I've never dealt with them other than talking to them at conferences. They're the brand to stick with if you want something that works off the shelf, and those are heavy duty enough for your needs.
I entered the world of aerials via the "DJI phantom 3 professional"
Granted, I've not needed any customer service, I have and am having a very pleasant experience flying the drone and enjoying the footage I can acquire with it. A few ND filters, some extra props, lots of reading/video research, and I'm good to go. Get an extra battery, or two.
After wanting and waiting for over a decade, I finally entered into this as well with the phantom 3 professional. Why? I decided they have gotten good enough and cheap enough.
Im very happy with it. Had it about 8 months now. No contact with customer service yet.
Dji seems to be the volume leader now and that has a couple advantages for the consumer. It's one reason I chose them over the 3DR Solo.
And now the phantom 3 is even cheaper than when I bought it
i have the phantom 2. i had issues which i couldn't diagnose so i just sent it to a 3rd party company that repairs them. i didn't buy from them and i just paid for the repair even though it was under warranty. it ended up being the wireless transmitter for the LCD monitor. at the time i found access to DJI was not easily approachable and frustrating. i bought some extra body parts like the legs, props but am not enough of a nerd to get the rest of things. i looks at it like owning an RC race car hobby. they are going to crash and things will break. either you learn to fix it or pay someone else to fix it. for me i just consider it the price of admission.
I had just bought the 3 - then the 4 came out 2 weeks later so i got the 4. I love the 4. love it.
Dont get to fly it much in nyc but was in ireland recently and i got to play with it for 3 weeks.
I'm not a experienced flyer - so I liked the additional features in the 4 and also got the insurance for a year.
The customer service (in my own personal experience) is atrocious. I've had a brand new Phantom that exhibited a 3-4 meter altitude drop when stopping from fast, straight-line tracking shots in any direction. This was 1st day outta the box. Then it crashed twice during a hover the following day with no input on the sticks. A motor or esc was cutting out that simply dropped it from the sky. They've had it for well over a month and are trying to charge me to replace all 4 motors and escs. And no explanation for the altitude drop. They also didn't reply to my emails for 3 weeks! My heavy lifters are custom builds (non-dji) as I simply cannot rely on the company. Was about to pull the trigger on an Inspire RAW, but not after this experience.
I ended up buying a used Phantom 3 Pro off of Amazon For under $700. I've had no issues with it so far.(knock on wood!)
I looked at the Phantom 4 briefly, but the camera is the same as the 3. I figured no sense spending the extra money!
Very happy so far...
