DJI Osmo Handheld 4K Camera and 3-Axis Gimbal

If the image is good I'll be picking up the OSMO with an X5. Looks like a interesting tool, especially for documentary work, & similar, with skeleton crews.

the bmc mcc has a smaller chip and.. well the raw version of this might just be better..

Yeah, but the RAW version of this camera costs more than an URSA Mini.

If cost is no problem - then yeah, RAW out of a M4/3 sensor should be pretty good.
I just think that for over five-thousand dollars one could come up with an enormous amount of other hardware options that would serve additional purposes.

Geez, was all set to get the Pilotfly H1+ and now this drops and looks pretty awesome. I could fund most of this by selling my GoPro Hero4 Black kit and eliminate defishing footage in post. Damn you DJI, damn you!

Anyone know if you can put a ND filter on the X3 camera, specs don't list a filter thread.

EDIT: THe FAQ says it comes with a UV filter, ND are optional. Cool.

yep....has filter threads !

The Osmo looks neat. However, there would be many more options from other manufacturers soon. Knowing DJI there would be more iterations of this camera from DJI itself as well. Buy if you need this now and can make money quickly. The X5 is certainly not small change.

As a camera manufacturer, Go Pro still has a significant lead over DJI interms of volumes and quality. (without considering X5 as I haven't tested it). I am waiting to see what Go Pro comes out with as the replacement of Hero 4 Black. Personally I would prefer to buy my own camera and handle bar stabilisation combo and not locked into a manufacturer.

For those considering the "entry level X3 version" of this Osmo, might it not be better to use a Gopro Hero 4 and this Feiyu FY-G3?

Apart from having to deal with Gopro fisheye at least you are not locked into DJI camera systems (very cheap X3 or very expensive X5 & X5R)

EDIT - Just found this link to an updated version, the Feiyu FY-G4.

I think $5,000 US for the X5 (just the camera) was mentioned somewhere - plus, apparently, you will be able to buy the Osmo without the X3 (I imagine for a few hundred $). Not sure how much more the X5R will be - but at those prices I'd probably go another route anyway.

Ok, maybe not that combo but I could see Sony coming out with something like this with a larger sensor (1", APS-C, full frame) and lightweight wide angle prime if there is a large enough market.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be critical of your camera and lens choice. It's just that the DJI camera and gimbal are integral so a different camera won't work with the DJI gimbal. The X3, X5, and X5R are a camera/gimbal You'd have to go non-DJI.

News Shooter mentioned there will be a grip only option that you can add the X5 to but I don't see it listed anywhere. Curious what the price will be. Nevermind. "The pricing and availability of the X5 versions and the grip only option is yet to be announced."

Interesting to note that the B&H prices for each camera include gimbal. So, it seems at least initially, you'd buy camera and gimbal.
What's not seen is independent sales of camera or gimbal at all.

My own hunch is that, at first, they'll be selling gimbal and camera together (mix and match). I'm not sure the logic of selling gimbal only since one MUST get one of the cameras with it. Once one has a gimbal and X3 some will want to upgrade to X5 or X5Pro or gimbal and X5 owners upgrade to X5Pro.

I guess some will want to use their Inspire camera on the gimbal but DJI notes someplace that's not quite the same functionality as the gimbal specific cameras. This would be the only case I can think of where one might buy gimbal without camera.

They need to offer a gimbal with the X5 at a lower price I would not want the gimbal with the X3 just waste of money for a camera I would not use.

I almost bought that exact combination the other day before I ordered the Osmo. Price is about the same. If you research the gimbals though, lots of issues with them and if you look at the footage out there shot with them, I find very few pieces that look truly smooth and professional. Supposedly the motors in the Feiyu are quite weak and according to Cheesycam.com there is a new CAME TV Go Pro Gimbal that has a much better motor/sensor input system. It seems that many Go Pro gimbal owners have problems with the various gimbals with the horizon being off, the unit becoming non-responsive and needing to be rebooted, etc. The Go Pro Gimbals seem to be a bit rough around the edges and require you to download software (PC only, I am on Mac and don't run Windows on it) to fine tune the gimbal, using very arcane programs and procedures. Frankly, they mostly look like something that a gadget hound would have fun tweaking and playing with, but I have no interest in that, I am a cameraman who needs a tool that I can just grab and start shooting with, often under time, space constraints.

One feature not possible with the Go Pro gimbals that the Osmo can do that appeals to me also is that I can put Osmo on a table or tripod and with the phone app, I can aim and control the framing of the rig. That could be very handy for some corporate shoots I sometimes do where I have to record executives at tables who are doing team activities, I need to be low key and not get in their faces, yet need to capture what is happening at the table. A long lens shot with my C100 and CU cutaways with the Osmo could be really useful. I also bought the extension stick and the car mount so there is very little that the Osmo can't do that the Go Pro could and I am confident that the Osmo will be plug and play, take it out of the box and start shooting as it is an integrated unit. (Fingers crossed). I have never owned a DJI product but supposedly they are generally pretty reliable. I did email the LA office last week to ask about spare battery availability and have not heard a response yet, so we'll see about support but I already know that the Feiyu, CAME TV and other third party gimbal support is weak. I will still be buying some GoPros for other reasons but for a handhedl gimbal I can just grab and it works, the Osmo seems like a more practical solution for my needs.

Already read that the Inspire camera tops out at 60 fps while the Osmo version tops out at 120 fps in 1080. I am also not clear on the lenses for the X5, there is a DJI branded lens and then they show it with three third party lenses. Does the X5 take any M43 lenses or only certain models? Why is DJI selling their own branded M43 lenses when the market is already flooded with M43 lenses?
