DJI Osmo Handheld 4K Camera and 3-Axis Gimbal

I bet the Sony QX1 APS-C camera would work on that DJI 3-axis gimbal with 16mm pancake lens.

The QX1 only shoots 1080p but the next upgrade should have 4K.

I'll say that the X5 will grade pretty darn good. I get decent looks using the X3 camera on the Inspire 1. I think the X5 will have a better resolving power due to the M4/3 chip. Would be nice to know if they can up the X5 to at least 100Mbits though instead of the 60Mbit.

Here is some pretty wacky decently graded stuff I've shot with the X3 though all variations of the cameras firmware (from before they had a LOG profile to other stuff like the sharpness settings. When first launched the camera was either way too sharp at 0 sharpness to way too soft at -3. They have since tweaked that so some shots look soft, some sharp, some way too sharp).

Not bad I just bought a phantom 3 myself I believe the camera or should I say sensor is the same on the inspire, I assume you are shooting with the log setting and grading after the fact

Geez, was all set to get the Pilotfly H1+ and now this drops and looks pretty awesome. I could fund most of this by selling my GoPro Hero4 Black kit and eliminate defishing footage in post. Damn you DJI, damn you!

Anyone know if you can put a ND filter on the X3 camera, specs don't list a filter thread.

EDIT: THe FAQ says it comes with a UV filter, ND are optional. Cool.

For most of it, yes LOG. Many clips though are pre-LOG and when the camera launched. Let's just say, it works. The X5 though should be interesting.

That said, I'm shocked at how much camera IQ you get from these little things - SHOCKED. And it's just the beginning - the tech is evolving at warp speed. Every time I think I've sorted everything out gear-wise, I blink, and there's something new on the horizon. Wow.

No kidding, right?!?!
"Hey, did you see this new camera that..DUCK!.....the tech in your hand just got SMOKED!!

Yeah....it's starting to get damn disconcerting.

I was hours away from pulling the trigger on a Go Pro Hero 4 Silver and a handheld gimbal, was trying to pick one out. Then I saw the No Film School link today and checked this out. I ordered it from B&H, this thing looks amazing. For me, this would fulfill an occasional shot in a corporate project, we are putting together a car-centric sizzle reel for pitching a TV show, so many things this will come in handy for. I am the opposite of many pros, I enjoy pushing low end equipment and seeing how well I can make it perform. It's easy to go out and rent an Amira, light it well to shoot great looking footage, it's a bit harder to use tools like this and my low end C100, to see how good I can make them look. This thing is going to be really cool and if I like the X3 camera, who knows, maybe I will spring for the X5 eventually to go with it? A lot of GoPro with gimbal footage I see, frankly looks pretty crappy with not very fluid movement. The various demo reels on the DJI website shot with the Osmo, overall, look pretty nice. I think for $650.00, this is a viable alternative to buying a Ronin M and trying to make my C100 work on it. Of course this won't look nearly as nice as the C100 footage but it will look good enough for many tasks. It is the same old story, I often shoot projects where I would like to use my jib arm, slider and possibly a Ronin, but there is never time to mess with it, to balance it, calibrate it, etc. so they end up not being used.

I can't tell you how many times I have flown with my slider to Europe, Africa, east coast, etc. and NEVER took it out of the case for lack of time and or space! What's the point of dragging it all over the world if I never use it? The Osmo, I can totally see traveling it and actually using it and integrating the footage into final productions. I shot coverage of a 10k race, a huge charity event in the Spring. If I would have the Osmo, I could have shot such better footage that I did with just a shoulder mounted camera. This will be a really useful tool in the toolbox, whereas I think a Ronin M will just end up not being used by me very often, too much to setup, balance, tweak, big extra case to pack, etc. It's not always about having the biggest and best. For a lot of my work, it is about having the smallest, lightest and quickest to use, especially when I am traveling the world and trying to shoot b-roll on the fly. The Osmo has me pretty excited about what I can shoot with it.

They need to sell a version bundled with the X5 and X5 raw cameras.

The most of us don't need the x5 aerial gimbal that comes with the x5 nor the x3 camera that comes with the OSMO.

Beyond that Id say they need better comms and (in my case) UK dealers that know the score.

I have not had time to follow the gimbal market.. just want to ask some questions and then buy.

Do the cameras even come off these gimbals? It looks like a permanent pairing.
I know you can "remove" the camera, but is the gimbal built in such a way that mounting a different camera is even possible?
It doesn't look like it is.

Good catch.
Yes I agree with your findings.

So, they need to sell a bundle with the x5+gimbal for the ones that doesn't like the x3 quality

Why is the X5R over three times the cost of the X5- is it just RAW or are there other differences?

i think the x5r price point is pretty good when you really think about what you are getting... raw micro 4/3 and gimbal built in... crazy... this will make the an amazing b-cam-(jury is still out on IQ until I get some CDNG files though) right now I have a ronin holding a 5d3 shooting raw, separate monitor, separate wireless FF, separate wireless HD transmitter batteries and multiple cables etc the list goes on and on.. its a headache to keep it happy on set.. x5r and osmos- basically give me the same thing in the palm of my hand. I wonder if the new DJI FF will work with the osmo, anyone know? i know it plugs right in to the remote on the inspire- so why not this... also-- on the occasion I hire drone OP- I will have raw camera in the air...
Barring a miss on IQ this thing has monster written all over it.

I like the design and I also dig the X5. My only beef with the X5 is that the recording bitrate should (ideally) be higher. If they can up the bitrate that would make a lot more people very happy.

And I just bought a steadicam 2 weeks ago, ;)
This looks quite interesting. Received an email from DJI yesterday about it. I can see a lot of uses for it.
At least my steadicam will work with all my existing cameras and as a monopod, and it was at a large discount so it will be worth it.
