"DJI Added to “Economic Blacklist” in the United States"

How many of these new quads come with remote ID built in? It's a requirement in the USA now with certain time frames to comply.

This is a good question - and for me, certainly means I will not be purchasing a replacement for my P4Pro until the remote ID is being deployed by whatever manufacturer I purchase from next.
As for the time frames - the release I received from the FAA said this:
"The Remote ID rule includes two compliance dates. Drone manufacturers will have 18 months to begin producing drones with Remote ID, with operators having an additional year to start using drones with Remote ID."
That announcement came on 12/28/20 - so in my estimation that means June 28, 2022 for the first deadline, and then June 28 of 2023 before I will legally need a drone with remote ID.

And it’s part of a cyclical/self-aggrandizing problem. “We” want cheap stuff. It costs more to make it here than in some Asian factory. “We” buy the cheap stuff, the manufacturers continue to off-shore more manufacturing to keep costs down/profits up, which eliminates more jobs here, which means people need even cheaper stuff, etc., etc.

Yep. Any moral decision doesn't necessarily jibe with practicality. It gets more difficult when supply chains aren't clearly described to the consumer. My widget might say "assembled in Denmark" but who knows what impoverished Malaysian had to disform his back hauling chunks of sulfur out of an active volcano to make the parts from whence it was assembled. It's the inherent unescapable struggle of life in a global economy.

Doesn't mean it's not worth the struggle.

I'm all for buying local when it's possible and vaguely sensible, but sometimes you just have to admit Johnny Foreigner does it better. There's no shame in accepting that.

Readily willing to admit that. I have a mess of Leica lenses and Lupo lights and Sony cameras and drive Subarus and Toyotas etc etc.

However, I would not have bought a Volkswagen in 1938, and I will avoid buying CCP-funding widgets now regardless of how well made. Personal choice. I believe that's still a thing.

In fairness, nobody was buying Volkswagen in 1938. KdF made a few samples and then switched straight to the military version (Kübelwagen/Swimmwagen). The Germans were stuck with a similarly specc'ed Opel Kadett, which was a GM product. After the war, GM decided that it didn't need the 1936-40 model anyway and allowed it to be shipped to the Soviets as a part of reparations. The Soviets then produced Kadett as Moskvich 400 and 401 until 1956. The curious part was that GM made over 107,000 Kadetts in four years, whereas KdF made only ~ 56,000 Kübelwagen/Swimmwagen vehicles from their gigantic plant in KdF Stadt (now Wolfsburg) in almost five. The difference was that the GM used the conveyor belt belt/mass assembly system, whereas KdF did not. VW then made up for it after the war by hiring Heinrich Nordhoff, the Opel plant manager, in 1948. He turned 56,000 Kübelwagen units into 23,000,000 Käfer pieces.

As to Leontief - he was a (German born, thus the spelling) Nobel Prize winning Harvard economist, who specialized in several areas. On trade, he thought that the US outsources or imports the most labor intensive low priced products. Which was correct then and is generally correct now.

Fair enough. And yes, we still, just about, have free choice. Though, it seems many choices today are being limited by politics than once was the case.

The problem with making a moral judgment is where do you draw the line? State funding from a country engaged in genocide is an easy call to make but there are so many companies with less than ethical origins. Let alone all those trust funds who have earned their wealth through slave labour down the ages.

Not to mention bad things done by our own countries...

I guess I feel like we should focus on the present and use our political and purchasing power to shape a fairer world, both at home and abroad

There are lots of gray areas that defy consensus. But in the places where we agree (no forced labor, no human trafficking, etc), it would sure be nice to enforce prohibitions

the person downvoting some of these posts is in favor of buying products from companies who benefit from slave labor

The problem is that too many companies are guilty of using slave or under-paid labor. You can pretty much throw away all of your electronic devices because there's not much being made under first world conditions.

The Chinese president came out today at Davos and warned against a "new Cold War". It could be posturing, as often happens visavis the new political leaders, or it could be signaling willingness to play hardball.

The swing country here is Germany that runs the EU. It hasn't been greatly vituperant but it hasn't been effusive of China either. If the EU joins the US as the united block - and signs point to that - then it will be China vs. the rest of the G8. The relations may not get really icy but there're likely be sanctions, tariffs and more posturing.

Merkel has been a major compromiser over the years, real realpolitik and all. As she's leaving her post, she's unlikely to change but her successors might do just that.

Didn't the eu just sign a major trade pact with china? I think the odds are just as likely that it's the rest of the g8 vs the us. Or at least they were

The EU amd UK have always been pro USA and it was the previous US administration that threw that into doubt - massively. That danger is now past and the current administration seems determined to allow the EU and UK to resume normal, very friendly relations. Of course, there will be "bumps" along the road to trade deals but fundamentally, Europe as a block is firmly pro US, despite the last four years. The knowledgable view is that the EU should be extremely wary of getting too aligned with China and there is currently quite an internal debate going on to decide the limits they should adopt. Basically it is up to the US how things develop.

Likely Merkel successor Armin Laschet seems to be of the same "Geld über alles" strategy, which allows Russia to capitalize on its oil&gas sales to Germany regardless of what the EU and NATO perceive to its rulers misdeeds.

However, the Chinese-US tensions are not declining and are actually ramping up considerably.

China has warned that attempts by Taiwan to seek independence "means war".

The warning comes days after China stepped up its military activities and flew warplanes near the island.

It also comes as new US president Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Taiwan, and set out his stance in Asia.

Responding on Thursday, the US called China's statements "unfortunate" adding that "tensions over Taiwan did not need to lead to confrontation".

Yeah there are numerous indications that the new administration is continuing a confrontational stance towards China. It's not 2000 anymore or even 2010

The incoming Commerce secretary Gina Raymondo (yet to be confirmed) has indicated that she saw no reason to remove Huawei and other Chinese companies, including DJI, from the "entity list". At least, she phrased it as "she'd be in no hurry" to remove them from the EL.

Of course, the political decisions can evolve over time.

The Autel Evo II Pro (6k) is awfully good. 6k 30P, 4K up to 60P or 2k up to 120p.
1 inch Sony sensor. 10 Bit color and log profiles. Independently control iso, shutter
speed, and iris. Great battery life....they claim 40 minutes and it's actually approaching
that in real life. No geofencing. It's a pretty good alternative to the Mavic Pro 2.
I just got mine and have only flown it once so far (lots of rain in Alaska in the winter)
but I could post a couple shots if you want.
Here's one of many 'shootout' videos....yeah the YouTubers do these for drones too
not just cameras.

evo ii 8k drone is 30% off in b&h deal zone today: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1594157-REG/autel_robotics_600003019_evo_ii_8k_drone.html

PS I saw an article 2 weeks ago that said the "Latest DJI Fly Android app only available from DJI’s website, not the Play Store"
https://dronedj.com/2021/01/27/late...ailable-from-djis-website-not-the-play-store/
