Hi Frank.
Same Vinten sticks here. I was thinking at buying a Manfrotto 100mm halfball to mount Igus rails on tripod (till now 1 regular tripod at one end, smaller tripod on the other end).
May I ask you how you lock your Igus to Vinten legs? Is your solution ok for full sliding of that heavy vinten head + hvx?
Danke

Can I use the head of a Manfrotto 501 without the adaptor? I am worried about having to take the head apart but the screw comes down and is about 2 inches long.

I use a 501...no problem. Sounds like you have a half-ball attached, take that off and you're fine....it just screws on.

Whats the advantage of raising the tripod head? It seems as though that would add a little more play when sliding. Did you try with and without?

I have not seen any video; but I think I'm jumping in the middle of this thread!
Thanks!

For mounting the tripod head, I went with the Filmtools 4" riser. $25.95 plus shipping, and it works very well.

This looks great but would have more value if the parts were listed along with documentation of the assemblage. It looks great but I left frustrated. Clicked through to Vimeo saw no close ups, no shopping lists. If there was a follow up post to this, please link me. I have a shoot in a few days and cannot afford to spend big money.

the closeup build is:

Just wanted to jump into this thread with a couple videos I shot this year utilizing my ZazaSlider. I have it paired up with a 501 head.

I love this thing! Whenever I go on a shoot, it's going with me.

9 out of 10 sexy models think it's cool. Go Zaza!

And here's a music video that we did with a Canon 5D. I was not the DP, but we did use my slider a whole lot. :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Steve, I looked at that site as well, had someone else mentioned using a particular handle on the slider? Looks like there are plenty of choices!

Hey guys, would this be close to the Cinevate Atlas system? I mean the bearings/rails.

If so, you could make a meeeeeeaaaaaannn slider. Wish the shipping weren't so much.

Not even close. This company was addressed about two years ago in this thread (don't ask where, there are a ton of posts here!)...here's the company that makes the stuff:

Zaza, I think you'll find they are closer than you think brother.

No, Cinevate uses a completely circular bearing and rods....these aren't the same thing...trust me.
You want to look at this type: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/THOMSON-Super-Metric-Linear-Bearings-3DWE3?Pid=search or http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/THOMSON-Super-Metric-Linear-Bearings-3DWE8?Pid=search

That way you can use them on free-standing rods. Starts to get pricey though...thus the high price tag.

Now I got ya, Zaza. I thought you were saying the company you linked was the Cinevate fabricators.
Apologies.

But are the ones I linked as smooth as the Grainger bearings? I'd be fine with using the rails they provide.

What cha' think?

Zaza, any tips for someone starting to build a motorized Igus slider for time lapses and general smooth motion? I'm shooting with a HVX, but seems like most are using DSLR's..anything I should look out for while using a heavier camera?

Thanks!

You'd just have to try them and see... the circular bearings I was playing with a few years ago were kind of loud and didn't offer enough resistance for smooth starts & stops.
(something to think about, really easy sliding isn't always the best thing) I still don't think you can beat the igus stuff for price and performance... I've tried.

Go back a few pages in this thread...there's a really cool motion control modification...way over my head. I just prefer to slide manually. For ANY rig, you should be sure to center the weight load on the carriage, that's it. If there's too much weight off either side of the carriage it tends to 'bind' and won't slide smoothly.

EDIT....

Very cool stuff, but I don't think it's cheap.
