DIY IndieSlider...

I haven't seen this alternative idea yet. Just have always used the tripod set to different heights. Wow 6 footer KayDawgy ? Nice! And nice alternative to my name :p I got lucky to join years ago when it was available.

Just so people don't think I'm crazy, Post #1205 from 12/19/2009:

Hi!

I've just completed my DIY slider, Smooothslider (please forgive me for the name:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)).

It is a slider with bearings, giving a superfine sliding motion. I have never been a fan of the sliders with the sliding block, felt a bit to sturdy.

The rig is built by a piece of metal with holes in it, allowing many options for fastening a tipod head. You can easily pick one and drill up the hole a bit. Underneath the plate you will find 4 metall angels that have been welded to place. They too had allready prepared holes that I had to drill up a bit so that the screw would pass through.

I've used wingnuts on one of the sides in order to get the bearings in to the middle, and to get them fastened in one place...

On the back of the bearing you will find three screw washers. You can remove as many as two. This will make the bearings go back a bit, that will allow you to use thicker pipes or other things as rails.

I am very proud, I must say:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Here is a brief video of how it works and what it does:

Thanks!

some more slider footage i shot this past weekend...i kick myself for not bringing my tripod to help level some of these shots, as all i had were my 2x4 slider feet on pretty rough terrain. hope you like the vid!

...have I mentioned how much I like this Chris? What a GREAT location.
Keep them coming.

That's pretty cool, although I'd say more in line with the Dana Dolly on design. That said, I don't see anything to prevent flipping if the camera weight is offset, so you might want to consider adding to the design a method of keeping the shuttle on the tracks. One thing I love about my Igus slider is that the bearings wrap around so you can use different weight distributions without fear of your camera falling off of the track.

Another interesting thing, if using a light camera and you designed the bearing supports to not be fixed, but rotating, you could experiment with some PVC and curved tracks.

Yes, that's true! Tommorow I'll connect a cheapo tripod head on it. But for the testing tonight, I havent had any issues at all with it flipping over. It simply a matter of where you put the tripod quick release plate under your rig =).

I'll use this baby a lot!

That's the exact same thing I made while I was waiting for my Igus parts to show up... but I arranged the bearings a bit different so they straddled and rode the top of the rails along their edges, I had to prove it would work to my brother-in law because he didn't believe it would ;)

It was ok for something temporary, but it was really loud (aluminum rails frome Home Depot) and it was "too" smooth, I couldn't keep a constant speed with it. The good news is once my Igus stuff showed up I returned all the parts for my temporary one to HD and got my money back ;)

Hi all,
I'm new to this field of videography and am learning about sliders.
I've seen a lot about the igus slider.
It seems that in the States you can make one up for about $170. Does anyone know if this still the current price?
When I phoned Igus in Australia they said "yes we know what you want. Its $260".
Even though the Australian dollar is running at over parity with the US dollar everything in Australia always seems much more expensive than in the States.
I'm debating whether it would better to order direct from the US (depending on postage charges).
Does anyone have any info on ordering from Igus in the US if not a resident there?
Thanks.

igus US doesn't ship out of the country....there is a distributor 'down under' I've listed in the very first post.
I've shipped many there, but it can get pricey. Visit my web site, put one in the cart, select your country and you can see what it would cost.
Keep in mind, all the work is done for you and it's ready to go from me!
(plus you get my custom 4 bolt carriage)

Sorry guys, here's the real link

Oh and by the way kdawg, I agree with you about IGUS being the nicest budget friendly slider there is. In fact, I have a 2 foot and 6 foot slider in my arsenal.........I hate that your name is kdawg by the way

That's my zazaslider you showed at the 19 second mark but I REALLY like the legs that you show in the video you posted on here. Thanks much, going to order them tonight!

Thanks for the reply
Yes, I see that the freight cost certainly makes its presence felt.
The price that's paid for living at the arse end of the universe I guess.
I might stick to the local one as cash is tight and I have to stretch the budget as far as possible.
Cheers.

See what they are saying about these Konova Sliders.
MAJOR difference compared to the IGUS.
These sliders blow IGUS out of the water.
