DIY IndieSlider...

Would you recommend the Manfrotto 190XDB to hold the slider, head and XH-A1? I know its capable of supporting 11lbs, but I wonder about the strain there would be as you slide outwards.

Also, what head would you recommend for the XH-A1? I have a Libec tripod system I use now, but I plan on keeping that tripod in one piece and getting a system specifically for this slider. Is the 701HDV the best bang for my buck?

I work recommend something a little heavier. I use an older Bogen 3046, you can get them on eBay for around $125. Well worth the investment.

701 will work nicely...again I have a 701RC2 I picked-up cheap and it has served me well.

Zaza, Ok so I just got my 5 dMK2, battery charging as we speak, not sure if I should order this slider or wait on what you have coming. I already have a decent tripod Libec with a H70 head. What should do man?

If you have to have the slider, go ahead and buy it....I can't disclose anything for another week (2 weeks tops). That's all I can say right now....sorry.

Man. It took a couple days. Devouring hand fulls of pages when I had time. But I've finally reached the end. Or is it the middle?

Another potential Aussie purchase here when all my gear arrives. I've also talked to the guys at Treotham Automation and was quoted $345 after a 20% discount for the 16-60 1m rail and carriage. Perhaps if enough of us get together and do a group buy we can bring the price down even further...

Anyway, thanks again to Zaza for spending the time to share all this info. Will keep an eye on your site... definitely deserve something for your time spent.

If enough of you Aussie's are looking for this, let me know and perhaps I can buy a batch and send them over for you? I still can't believe how expensive it is down under!
Someone can act as a distrubutor...

Cheers to all.

A few members have asked me why I feel the need to attach an intermediate underplate and don't just tap into the Igus Rail for a tripod head mount. Here's the reason.

The fundamental principle is that harder metals contacting softer metals will eventually wear them down. That means that Steel screws going in and out of or turning constantly inside of threaded T6 aluminum holes, will eventually wear them down, resulting in play that may also result in misalignment.

The BEC plates I use are T6 with holes that are lined with stainless steel inserts. Thus my rigs always exhibit steel to steel contact at that support point. That's important because of the fact that we sometimes use a pivoting maneuver when operating the slider.

Finally received my slider, will tap this weekend and get some sample video up!

I am using a Manfrotto plate on mine for adding removing from the carriage. I too worried about putting something on and off there a lot, so this seemed the safest bet. Got the video plate which was like $60 locally, not bad, and uses the same plate as the video tripod heads which I plan to pick up next when my Velbon wears out.

The thing is like a tank though, wow, not as light as I thought, but that is a good thing!

I believe that may be the Glidetrack, which is made from IGUS parts. You can see from the endcaps that are specific to Glidetrack. Cool mount on there though.

Got my IGUS parts today and am going to tap!

Hey Zaza, I Have been reading through this tread for a while now and am still not sure what i should order. Want to know what everyone's thoughts are. I have a Canon 7D with the redrock mirco follow focus and the zoom h4n, and am thinking about getting the cincity mattebox (lightweight, or making one of my own) So there is slightly more weight on the rig than the camera and lens on its own. I do a lot of outdoor filming with backpacking so weight is a huge issue. I want something light weight that i can use in the filed but still tough enough to use with some more of the DSLR accessories. I wont be using the slider with any other cameras. What rail sizes should i get? What is the max length for the rails at each size? If anyone can help please let me know. i really want to put one of these together soon.

Hi everyone,

does anyone know if there were any images and or instructions on what to purchase so your slider looks like the one on the Vimeo ZaZaSlider group ?

I think this looks very professional looking. Have most of you made the same one ?

Everything you need is in the first post...get the 16-60.
You can get lengths of track up to 6', but you said you backpack a lot. What I would do is get 2 different lengths of rail, 1000mm for your normal shoots and 700mm for your 'backpack' trips. You can use the same carriage, just put it on the rail you want to use.

Again, phone numbers & part numbers are right in the first post.
