DIY IndieSlider...

This slider is awesome. I stopped by IGUS today with the slider...(My studio is only 5 minutes from there) I showed them the slider and they were very interested in seeing it. The product manager was not in though and he may visit my studio when he returns in a week, to see it in action. Of course they thought I made it and I was quick to tell them that it was not my build but that of the famous ZAZA. They seem to be a German company because I offered the services of my studio but was told that ,most of the still photography comes from Germany.

Man, ZAZA, this piece of equipment is awesome! Thanks a lot bud.

WOW...that is beautiful! Glad you're diggin' the slider.

My pleasure, I'm glad you like it....now show us some footy!

Thanks!

This thing is awesome. I can strap it to my backpack and hike in wherever I need to and have a fully functioning dolly, it's great. My old slider weighed 15 pounds, without the camera... this weights what, 5 pounds?

Hey gang, good weight bags here. Takes water or sand.
Great to help stablize those tripod legs with all of that extra slider metal.

They are about $14 'n change.

I bought everything you specified, unfortunately, my tripod head has a weird bolt thread pitch and angle, thus I can only order a bolt specifically from Matthews, so i'll need to wait a few more days before i can setup...

But the rails and carriage are sitting in my living room, justdying to get used

It will be worth the wait... keep us posted.

my carriage was a little resistant also (uniformly so - but resistant nonetheless) - when I loosened the bolts as per zaza's suggestion it became beautifully smooth

hmm I wonder if the tolerances on mine are just a little off

....right...this is cool - just got off the phone with Igus tech.

This is OFFICIAL igus procedure for "aligning" the carriage.
It only needs to be done once.

They say

1. Loosen all carriage bolts - (don't remove - just loosen a few turns)
2. slide carriage back and forth to allow bearings to align themselves)
3. (tech actually recommended "tapping" the center of the carriage to "bump" the bearings into place)
4. With downward pressure on carriage tighten the bolts again a few turns at a time (alternating them - i.e. do NOT crank one down and then do the other ones)

this should be it. worked for me

Nick

Thanks Nick. That's just how I explained it to another user in a PM...glad I was right! I added this to the end of the first post for future reference.

Yep, this is the exact same way Zaza told me to do in a PM. Thanks again Zaza.
I tried it Zaza, but the carriage still sticks. It's difficult to move for only one person. If you have two operation the slide it's easy.
Any other ideas to get it to slide smooth? I tried silicone spray and it didn't help much either.

I just leave the 4 guides ever so slightly loose. no need to tighten them at all actually.

I can see it being very shaky if you don't tighten the bolts and try to pan or tilt while you slide.

Pics coming up this weekend. Just picked up my 'IndieSlider hacker's scaffold' from the weld shop. just a few more tweaks and that will be ready for a trial run sometime next week. The 'Brake Job' pics will easily be up by Saturday Noonish ET. Thanks for your patience:thumbup:
I just joined the Innocentive.com community so I'm gonna be super busy this year! Ouch! Any professional bread bakers out there that need some consulting cash?

Looking forward to the pictures.

.

I'd call igus... that just doesn't sound right...you might have a defective part.
I just built another one for a DVXuser & it worked great.

Check with igus.

I can see it being very shaky if you don't tighten the bolts and try to pan or tilt while you slide.

When I initially put my carriage/rails together, i wasn't impressed with the amount of resistance. I asked Joe (Zaza) if this was normal; to which he replied "no".

I decided to loosen off the bolts on the carriage and wouldn't you know it - it became aligned. I then re-snugged the bolts. I hadn't even thought that there was an alignment issue because it looked fine, but that wasn't the case.

I can easily slide the carriage with one hand while manuevering the pan arm of the tripod head with the other.

Hey Neal! I want to see some footage with your slider....and I missed you in this last fest. Now you HAVE to make a film for the next one. (with sliding shot)

Hey,
These are really cool (as you all probably know by now) but.....
Has anyone worked out a solution for the torque/stress problem? I find that when I'm sliding and tilting without help the torque from tilting my head hangs up the "slide".

It works flawlessly with an assistant being my "dolly grip" and maintaining even pressure on the sliding plate.

Thoughts, anyone?
