Hey guys,

I've finished my video for this awesome band. Before I send it to the TV stations, I would like you to empty your mind "on" me. Say anything you like and hate. short or long. Just spit it out!

Here is the link

Just finished watching, Why did you just stick to the band performance after the first minute or so? Might have been better to intersperse some of the imagery you showed in the early part of the video through out. That way it breaks up the band performance and adds some variety. As is I found myself getting somewhat bored of the image.

Also, that band needs to get some kind of stylist or coordinator. Sure there is some reality to their clothing but at some points I just kept thinking that the wife beater just didn't look right on that guy.

It looks great, visually... very edgy and high energy. I am curious about a couple of things:

1. How many different takes were there (approx.)?
2. How were your shots made? Crane jib, hand held, or dolly track (like around the band)?
3. What filters did you use to get that edgy look?

One question which has to do with continuity: at the beginning of the video, you shock your audience with some quick raw scenes and then you go right to the band... do you think your video would have been more effective if you had revisited those scenes throughout the rest of it? Did you make the choice to do that or did your client? At what point in the post-production process did you decide to show just the band and not create more of a story?

Footage looks great! Good luck!

could have lived the rest of my life without seeing the cow pissing.

I liek some of the shots, and the treatment of the footage was good, but the lighting needed work. there was exposure, but no highlights. it looked a little flat. Now i say this because, a nice 2k behing them off camera would a given em a nice sharp pop off the black box.

Also, while that one long "dolley in" was really cool, i wound up watching the same EXACT footage style for 5 minutes. Why is there no Broll? why is there no virgins being massacred? no 2 foot tall stonehenges? no buckets of ****ign blood everywhere....???? DAmmit that is some hard core ****, you just shocked me with a cow pissing, and seagulls (?) ****ing and Goddam clown.... I wanna se some dying virgins!!!!!!

Look to this Video for an example. This is Chris Cunningham's latest. Its a really simple treatment, just a raw chicken, a bedsheet and a strobel ight, but look how effective it is ,and how well it breaks up the band segment. (and yes it is that dark intentionally)

It's interestting to note that P-2 technology has eliminated tape creases only to be added back in post. Did you use a Jimmy-jib? Overall very good shooting and editing.

The lines make it difficult to watch. I know it's en vogue to add grunge to video, but that just looks like poor video and is psychologically unpleasant and distracting. If you want to "punk it up" add an overlay video track that plays in all that the black space in the background of cows pissing and whatever else. The footage of the band looks good and you have some nice camera movement, but frankly it gets stale very quick. This isn't Pink Floyd were watching, it's a 3 chord punk band, and they don't do anything special in the performance, nor are they exceptionally pretty to look at. If it was Gwen Stefani sure I wanna see nothing but the band, but it's just some dudes and your target audience clearly isn't chicks.

here are some things
cow pissing -not HIP or provocative-not sure why its there
monkey smelling finger-doesnt fit into this
clown= ?????

now, maybe if u had all those 3 mentioned above during the whole video to cut up the performance, might be a little more bearable to watch, but not by much. Video was shot fine but boring. Song was good, but with a song like that u need a birght happy video, not a dark dull emo video.
i hope that helps

great quailty in the footage. The story is pretty boring though. I would just add in more b roll throughout the video to make it more interesting.

The smoking microphone looked weak, as did the anticlimactic "blastoff" that is consummated by a microphone stand hitting the stage. All that countdown for that? There are a number of good-to-great shots -- including the overhead and the dolly. The grunge matter (cow, birds, etc.) adds nothing but distraction. There's a place where the guitar moves in front of the singer's face before you cut...cutting a few frames sooner would help. I agree the constant video scratch lines are distracting.
The ending isn't much of an ending. They just all kinda stand around. It seems like some of your best technique work should be saved for the ending to provide some pop instead of fizzle. If you could talk the band into one less chorus, I think that'd help too -- that middle interlude didn't do much for their tune.

I wasn't really feeling it man. Personally I like videos that have some kind of story going on in them. Not just the band jumping around.

I cannot call it a video, it's more a tv show for me. Very nice camera movements thou. My screening was very disturbed, was an effect or its my antenna?

Thanks!

I've decided to shoot b-roll footage to cut to. A scene where a couple has sex. Same lighting as the band.

All shots are done handheld. I either where riding in my skateboard or standing on a trolley a friend of mine where pushing around.

Shoot on tape in 25p. I don't use HD (yet?).
