DIY IndieSlider...

WTF? where can I pick up a cheap tripod head? I'd prefer a local shop so I can get it by wednesday, but can't seem to find anything. I also looked at the cheap one recommended on page 1, but it seems to be discontinued.

I already have the 3/8in bolt in, so I'm looking for a head that has 3/8th's... but most of the cheap ones are 1/4 inch. Anyone find anything at a fry's or best buy or wolf camera?? or????

ZaZa Slider for XHA1

ZaZa Slider for XHA1

Hi ZaZaCast,

Thank you for the excellent DIY + extended Forum thread. Hopefully you can help to get me going sooner than later.

I'm looking to build a slider, what would you recommend for an XHA1 with wa lens adaptor using a Bogen 501 on a Manfrotto 745XB Tripod:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/504855-REG/Manfrotto_745XB_745XB_MDeVe_Aluminum_Video.html

I'm doing mostly Landscape and Scenic video right now so I'm on the go doing a lot of hiking. I'm going to use quick release plates. Would you still recommend your first post configuration for me:

WS-16-60 Drylin 'W' rail 1000mm
WW-16-60-10 Drylin 'W' carriage

Is 36" necessary or can I get away with something shorter for portability?

Many thanks.

i had just ordered 4 items,

1x WS-16-60 Drylin 'W' rail 1000mm
1x WS-16-60 Drylin 'W' rail 1500mm
2x WW-16-60-10 Drylin 'W' carriage

try to make a 1000mm and a 1500mm track, not sure did i ordered the right things??

and still didn't figure out how to make the end stopper yet... but still want to thanks zazaslider!

Yes you ordered the correct things... but unless you need two different sliders to be used at the same time, you could have only gotten one carriage and put it on the track you need to use.

End stop solutions are in the first post of this thread....or.... www.zazaslider.com

Ryan, you could always, drill and tap a hole just a little off center for a 1/4" head? Otherwise, keep checking eBay, there are always deals there!

Funny you should mention that, that's exactly what I was going to do if I couldn't find something today or tomorrow.:thumbsup:

Yes, those are the correct parts... and you can get a short length of track.
I like my 700mm which gives you a good 2 foot of slide and makes a good shoulder mount (with the ZazaSlider Feet!).

Thanks for such a quick reply. How much weight do the feet add? On the tripod do they help in stabilizing? Do you find the 700mm much more stable at the ends than the 1000mm? Thank you.

The feet add a little over 3 lbs.

On the tripod do they help in stabilizing?
They do...and when it's on the shoulder, they act as a counterweight for balance.

No... the 1000mm is very stable right out to the end. Anything longer is iffy and you need more sandbags.

Guys i have a silly question about the workflow for the shots:
- When you are a "one man show2lol ZAZA!) "in case you are alone for a shootin session what do u usually do? Do you plan to shoot first the normal shots on the tripod (without slider) then once u finished ,you mount the slider and you shoot all the sliding shots ?I ask this to avoid to mount and take off the slider everytime....
- would you suggest to go out at least in two people and maybe 2 cameras (one for the simple no-slider shots and the other one for the slider?)
I know that could sound silly but just wanted to know how u r acting!
thx

These are very silly questions! LOL!:happy:

Steve, one of the great things about the slider is...wait for it....you don't HAVE to slide during a shot!

I leave the slider on the tripod all the time and it comes in really handy. The tripod I use (an older Bogen 3046 I got on eBay for $125.00) has a crank so you can adjust the height. What this allows me to do is set & level the tripod...now I can slide the camera 1 1/2 foot in either direction and adjust the height without having to move the tripod! It makes framing the shot really easy & quick, especially on over-the-shoulder shots. Frame the shot, lock the carriage (My carriage brake/lock instructions are linked in the first post or here:http://www.zazaslider.com/instructions.html ) and you can pan or tilt...whatever.

Here you can see what I mean:

(BTS from "Miss Laid" www.zazacast.com )

Notice I have 3, 5lb. ankle weights in the spreaders....makes it solid as a rock all the way out to the ends.

check this new product out .... just happened to be posted today on Youtube by
Hague, the people that make a steadi-cam like stabilizer. This thing is called the Hague MTD Mini Table Dolly.

Looks pretty cool. I've seen so many DIY projects using skateboard wheels but I"ve never seen a design using THREE wheels like this one.

and I just noticed they have a different model, with wheels, looks like some railing system, with interesting wheels. Will give people ideas

I made it to page 198. I feel like I just read a marathon. Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to perfect this diy project.

I know the 20-80mm is overkill, but does it work as good as the 16-60 rail system?
I love to overbuild things and with the current shortage or stock I would like to use the 20-80 if it works just as good as the others.

Also is it better to get the 150 or 200 carriage when ordering the 20-80 rail?
Thanks,
Derrick Perrin

20-80 is massive overkill...so you should love it! It does work just fine. The 150mm carriage is more than enough for the carriage length.

David Zeno,
I have no choice but to post this here since you don’t allow PM’s.

Although I appreciate your enthusiasm, this thread is for (and about) sliders built around the igus product.
Please DO NOT post information about dollies, skater dollies or other types of sliders.
It’s an open forum and you can just as easily start your own thread for these other projects.

Thanks in advance for your understanding in this matter.

Sincerely,
-Zaza
