DIY IndieSlider...

Will do... I mean won't do... whatever, I confuse myself!

Buy the way Zeph, how is your creation coming along? I thought that was a very good idea? Any advancements on it?

Does anyone else attach their slider on top of the head....then attach the camera directly to the bracket? Like this:

I find it great to be able to pan/tilt the entire slider, it makes it easier to do so while sliding. This is how Kessler does it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QCZd__du-0

I'm suprised so many people mount their tripod head to the sliding bracket. What are the advantages of doing it that way?

THE best would be to mount the slider on a head...AND the camera on a head on the carriage! (you'll see the coolest shot options would come from this set-up in the Kessler video...Eric & I have talked about this) You can even get a mini-jib shot too.

I mounted the rail directly to the tripod & the camera on a head for the following reasons:

1. It's easy to just pop the camera off and put it on my shoulder mount or crane or whatever.

2. When you start to tilt the rail, the weight of the camera causes uneven pressure on the carriage and it might stick or not slide as smooth by hand. The krank on the Kessler solves that problem.

3. With the head on the carriage, I can quickly reframe a shot, add a little slide or dolly, slide the camera all the way to the end and pan directly down over the edge for a bird's-eye shot, etc... the possibilities are endless.

That's the way I use it. There's nothing wrong with mounting the camera directly to the carriage.

Hope you're enjoying the cool shots you can get with this rig. Be sure to check out the way I use it in "Miss Laid", a QuestFest film! (shameless plug)

Does IGUS do the crank / belt parts used on Kessler Crane's Pocket Dolly, too? If so, it might be worth trying to build one of those, if the parts are available...

I don't believe they do....some of those parts are custom machined by Kessler. I'd just buy the Pocket Dolly from Kessler if I wanted the krank...I think once you got all the parts and the time you'd have to put into it...it would end-up costing you more! I believe the Pocket Dolly is $499.00, a GREAT price for the piece.

I also have to say, Kessler builds top quality gear... I own a bunch of it!

Good point, Mr. Zaza, Sir. :)

Is their Pocket Jib out yet, or just their Pocket Dolly?

I tried to order my parts today and they were out of stock of the 60mm rails, not getting any in for like 3 weeks.

WOW... I guess these things are selling good! I bet that Eric Kessler bought them out! LOL!!!

Hi Zaza,
I was hesitant in sharing my 1st video with the slider. I'm not really a pro or anything. I'm more of a musician. Right, now I just like doing videos with my 8 year old son. Anyway, no more excuses. Here's my first video with the slider. My wife asked me what I wanted to do for father's day and I said I want to play with my new toy so here it is. I recorded my kid singing then we made a video.

Thanks,

RONNIE....EXCELLENT....OMG! That was great. Your son is just too cute (I know he wouldn't want to hear that...so shhhh) I enjoyed that and you've created a memory that will last a lifetime...or two. Why didn't my parents make cool films like that of me? Oh... technology...got to love it. I'm honored to be mentioned in the credits and that was some wonderful slide-shootin'!

I'm glad you're getting good use out of the slider..keep it up!

Hey Skinny. Hey Zaza. Thanks for the support guys! This is really what I want to do in life but I somehow ended up doing software development for web and iPhone. So I'm really happy my kid allows me to use him to practice what I learn in these forums. And yeah, they grow so fast so I'm saving all these footages. This slider is the best addition. I was missing movements in my shots and this certainly gives me some choices. I'm getting a bunch of questions at cinema5d so I referred all of them here in Zaza's world.
Thanks again for the kind words. My kid reads your comments as well.

Chris

call me Chris...i'm gonna change my stupid screen name eventually...it's a nickname i've always had, but it's lame, cuz i'm 32 and need to knock it off hahaha

Chris, Skinny is cool. If I had that nickname, it will remind me to stay fit and live up to the name.

Zaza- if that's your real name (LOL),
make a ZazaSlider and you too can make a difference
ha ha ha. It's so true. I'm a believer! It's time to make a commercial. Zaza got me 1 million dollars! (like larry parker)

Hey all,

Add me to the list of people glad I found this thread! I'm about to order a GH1 setup, and decided that a Indeslider must be part of my setup.

Here's what I'm wondering:

I just read this thread top to bottom, and it seems like everyone who uses monopod's with the setup uses a tripod in the middle, and monopods on either end. Has anybody tried a tripod on one end, and a monopod on the other? Thinking through the statics in my head (Mechanical Engineer in Training, and I just took Statics last semester so it's still fresh in my head) it seems like this should work fine.

The kind of forces that would cause the setup to tip forward/backward are not exaggerated by the camera being at the end of the track. The 2 kinds of forces that are exaggerated is the bending force on the track (Fixed by the monopod), and if you were to push on the side of the track (IE, if a DVX were on it, pushing on where the battery is) -- that force *would* be exaggerated, so don't push there.

But for 1 meter of track, and a light-weight setup like a GH1, do I even need to bother with 2 supports? Mostly it would just give me an excuse to order a Feisol carbon fiber monopod along with the Feisol legs I'm planning to use...

I've said this a thousand times... this stuff is tough...there is NO flex at all in the track (1000mm). You see how I screw it onto a tripod after tapping the center hole. I add three 5lb. ankle weights to each leg of the tripod and I can slide my DVX100B w/ M2, lens and follow focus right to the very end with NO flex...and no chance of it tipping over. In fact, I often slide the camera to the very edge and pan directly down over an object.

Go back a few posts and you'll see pictures....really... you don't need any kind of end support on a 1000mm piece of rail.

This is a no-brainer for a GH1...I use my D90 on it all the time too!
