loved it? hated it? didn't think much of it? well the Iranians hated it.... LOL!

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/film/story/2007/03/13/iran-300.html

and you wonder why the whole planet bootlegs Hollywood films.

From that link:

"Javad Shamqadri, a cultural adviser to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, called the film "psychological warfare" against Iran and its people."

I think Hollywood was a little more interested in making money from tickets and merchandise, but hey, I'm whacky that way.

As to the movie, visually it was very impressive, and keeping in mind that it was a representation of a graphic novel, meant to be experienced comic book/graphic novel style, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I wasn't looking for Gone with the Wind, or Forrest Gump. I was looking for a visually impacting violence fest. I got that and more. Kicks ass.

Was the writing poor? Was there not enough character development? Were there some outright breaches in historical fact? Was there a degree of fantasy thrown in intentionally? Was some of the dialogue cheesy? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Was that the entire point, given its origins? Yes.

Good flick, hit every button it was intended too.

I pretty much agree with what Mr. Brody said.

The action was cool and cinematography interesting, but it was lacking in alot of other areas.

I was disappointed by how fake some of the scenes looked. Some bad compositing in places. You'd think by this time no one would have any trouble making something look as if it wasnt shot using greenscreen, but if you even glance at the edges of anyone in this movie you can tell right away. The only company that really has greenscreen shooting figured out is ILM. I know how much everyone hates the overly animated prequel star wars trilogy, but as for compositing and greenscreen work its pretty flawless.

Weta can't do it right. There are alot of bad spots in King Kong and the Chronicles of Narnia. As for other greenscreen heavy movies......I wasnt impressed by sky captain...and I think the only reason sin city looked alright was because it was mostly black and white.

I dunno. I wouldnt think it would be a problem at this point.

Just saw this today. LOVED it. Mere words can not express the awesomeness.

"I have this cramp in my leg from killing all your men...makes it hard to kneel."

Just saw it for the third time tonight, dang I love this movie! I am beginning to disagree with people that attack it for "1 dimensional characters". Your heros do not have to have flaws, they just have to have motivation. Aristotle wrote that you can tell stories of men as better than they are, the same as they are, or worse then they are. It seems todays modern critics only want stories of men as worse than they are, or at best, the same as they are. In this movie, these men were better then they were. And that is awesome. They were motivated and that motivation was explained.

Well, my opinion is that it should be viewed as 2 differenent things.
1. Entertainment
2. A movie

As movie, it's probably 6 or 7 out of 10. It's not a great story or great characters and can't be fairly compared against Lord of the Rings, Gone with the Wind, or Citizen Kane.
As entertainment, it couldn't have been done better. To make this into a better movie with more character or more story would've taken away from just how awesome the experience of watching it is. Personally, if you want the less entertaining, but better movie version of 300, watch Gladiator (not to say Gladiator isn't enjoyable, but it can't compare with the adrenaline rush of 300).

Hehe... just for future reference... anyone can do great screen work from
decently shot footage... it the poorly shot and lit stuff that becomes
a nightmare. Its totally not fair to either blame, nor praise the vfx facilties
in many if not most cases.

Compositors move around a lot... some of the guys you're 'praising' at
ILM, got on airplanes and flew to weta for kong. Also, hehe... funny one
here, a LOT of the prequels were rotoscoped, not keyed. With all
the chrome, and all the blue on the characters, shot on blue screens with
the sony f900... which takes the bulk of its compression in the blue
channel, tons of shots were totally sent off to roto :) Plus, lightwrap
is the friend of the compositor... there is lots of backlighting in
star wars, so its pretty forgiving.

300 is a heck of an undertaking. There is a ton of work in there and
its quality level matched its budget. I loved it.. and I've yet to hear
from a vfx artist that thinks otherwise. Solid work, all around.

This film, had two of the most beautiful moving images ive seen in a long time. One was the Persian fleet being destroyed in the storm, the other was the Phalanx driving the persians off the cliff, in profiles silouette. These were breathtaking picutures. Also, the costume, and art direction was amazing. Xerxes was increadible looking. Also im happy they used makeup to make the hunchback as opposed to a CGI charachter.

This thread SUCKS :( , 300 isn't out until 5th April in Australia (and they wonder why people download movies).

Offtopic questions... How much do you guys pay for a cinema ticket. I'm AUD $14.30, that's about US $11.45.

In Los Angeles, you can pay from about $5 (stick-to-the-floor kind of places) to about $14 (Arclight Theater assigned seats, primo everything, yada yada).

I usually assume that people download movies because they want to help screw me and my colleagues out of our retirement funds...

Stick to the floor? What kind of movies are you going to?

Ha ha, Sad Max I would never do such a thing. I always wait to see a flick at the cinema if I'm vaguely interested. I do think whoever regualtes ticket prices should have a good hard look why box office is down. I used to see nearly everything at the cinema when I lived near a cheap one, now it's maybe one or two a week - just too expensive. Thank god I don't have kids to take.

StickToTheFloor Cinemas. Does that $5 include a raincoat? btw what a great cinema chain title.

Oh, that was just generic grumbling. I didn't mean to accuse you of anything personally.

StickToTheFloor Cinemas asks that their valued customers bring their own raincoats, in order to help keep ticket prices affordable for everybody.

I expect that the main force holding prices down, will be the increasing number of people who have nice big HD home theater systems, who won't pay more than a certain amount to sit in what is basically a bigger living room and watch what is basically a larger HD screen...

Back to the 300,

I think its important for people to read the 300 GN. The Film is like nearly frame for frame, from the Book. there are a few differences, but its mostly to make it shorter to fit in a 2 hour movie. Alot of people were saying the light looked unnatural, etc. but in Millers comic book, the Sky was a watercolor painting, ( probably made of coffe from the look of it) and the dark shadows, and oatmeal coloring was part and parcel of the comic book. The Film, like Sin City is the pages ripped out of the book and put on screen. The thing is this, alot of the back story/"narration" that is used itn the Graphic Novel, is VERY difficult to convey in Film, wihtout using a cheesy voice over. and well.... nothigns perfect. I enjoyed it, and now i wanna go work out... cause after a long winter of eating Craft sevice food... im getting doughy, and leonides is making me look bad here.....

I saw it for 6 bucks. Opening morning. AMC Torrance first showing.

My short 2 cents:
I loved it on all accounts. It has it's place. It did it's job. It was well crafted. Yes it wasn't AMELIE' or SCHINDLER'S LIST.

BUT CMON...I READ THIS WHOLE THREAD AND NOONE SAID HOW HOT LENA HEADEY IS!!!

And then I just found out she's in BROTHERS GRIMM w/ Monica Belluci!! There is a God...BTW, Anyone see BANDIDAS w/ Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz? I think my wife is getting me that for Father's Day.

Oh yeah...I liked Faramir. Don't rag on his narration!
