Dismantling the XHA1

Ok, so one of the pins in the DV port at the back of the XHA1 has snapped. This sounds like a common problem from what i can tell. I phoned up the repair company and they quoted £250 to fix it. That's INSANE! He then went on to say that he can give me the part i need for £30, so i went for it..

Now how the hell do you dismantle the XHA1's interleaving minefield of a body? I've unscrewed screws here and there but every piece seems to be holding the next around it on. I really don't want to destroy my XHA1.. But it's useless to me without a DV port and £250 is insane for such a tiny piece.

I would really love some help with this! I'm counting on being able to fix this within a week..

How much will they quote you for fixing your handywork?

Unless you can find a cheaper place, I think having them do it is you best bet if you need this repair done. These types of electronics are so easy to rip an internal cable and or loose a tiny screw within the body that is holding a plate together.

Why do you need the DV port though? buy a hv10 as deck.

Good point, although if i could afford a hv10, i'd probably have paid to get it fixed by now.

I'm not committed on the idea of ripping apart my camera. I need to find somewhere that will do it cheaply, considering I have the piece needed already! If i can get it done for £100 then that would be amazing.

I would just love to know if there's someone who has successfully done something like this. The fact that they offered to sell me the piece makes me think it may just be easier than you think. I'm not complacent to think that I can do it alone, although i think being clued up on what is required can't be a disadvantage when haggling the repair price down.

[EDIT] What i'm saying is i'm surprised these 'inhuman technicians' aren't lurking on dvx with the rest of us. And although i agree, that these electronics are best left for the pros.. I would love for advice from someone who's actually done this themselves.

I would just send it to the States and have them do it if they'll actually service a PAL camera. Same repair cost me $260 here.

sorry didn't realize the hv10s were still $400+ . I would still keep an eye out for a used hv10 that maybe has a broken lens or LCD and can be used as a deck....this way you won't wear out the heads on your camera and you might be able toget it for around 200 if its broken.

i just got mine fixed for a little shy of 300USD, i use the DV port for recording to externals. i tried disassembling it myself, and ended up deciding to send it in; it is almost impossible to get to that DV port, at least without disassembling it in its entirety.

im no expert, and generally i trust in someone with experience, but i am fairly capable with electronics. I probably could have permanently soldered a firewire line in there, but i havent the patience or the time.
