Directed my first music video - thoughts/feedback would be awesome!

Hi, so I first want to say that this forum is awesome. I've been reading this site since I owned a DVX100a!

Without the great posts and information on this site I'm not sure if I would have had the confidence to buy my T2i and use it as my primary film camera. While the T2i has its difficulties (and I'm probably looking to upgrade when I can afford it) I really am enjoying using it. So, thanks to everyone whose contributed to this forum!!

So anyway, here is my first music video I directed. Used my T2i, with mostly the Tokina 17-50 VC lens. I also shot it, edited it, everything really - so if it stinks nobody to blame but me :undecided... :cheesy:

Feedback/comments/criticism would be much appreciated. Any questions also, I'll be happy to answer!

Nice job.

I'd ease up on the MB schemes though. I kinda wanted to see just that classic folk-golden look. The feel was there but MB just kinda push's it to the extreme. Also I wasn't crazy about the diffused shots.

And for my two picky shots:
-The circling of the balance is kinda cheesy and in-your-face. An extreme close up would've been better. And I'd be a happy man if had a balance of $180 on my average bill. Should've put it a few grand at least.
-Then the part when they are in the room and seperate there is a motion detector on the wall in the back that kinda stood out a lot.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, there was a time crunch on the edit so I relied on the MBL for a shortcut, I agree that I used that crutch perhaps too much. The bill circling shot would have been alright if in every take he hadn't circled so damn slow! I really meant for that to be a quicker insert shot.

Overall, I feel I learned a lot, mostly about what not to do next time. With a crew of just myself, and a T2i and a tripod as my only equipment, I feel I managed okay. Although, I do feel like my equipment needs an upgrade.

If anyone could suggest what equipment would most benefit me based on this video and its shortcomings that would be greatly appreciated!

It's not the equipment as the project is fine, what needed to be tighten up imo is the direction. Circling a $180 bill really makes no sense to me and something with a bigger balance should have been used or not show any balance at all and leave the imagination to the viewer. Also you went EXTREMELY overboard with MBL which I personally did not like.

Other than that I think you have a really nice project that looks professional, just need to watch out for certain things and I agree 100% with what the other feedback was given. What I really did like is that you had a lot of shots, a concept and a great flow of the project.

8 out of 10 and I know you can do better, Good job!

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah the $180 was because it was one of a pile of bills on the table I guess...not sure what I was thinking. Really wanted that shot to be much quicker too...

Thats the first time I've ever color corrected footage and I didn't really know what I was doing. I wanted the footage to be colorful and stylized as its a rather boring setting otherwise, or at least I thought so. While you guys, and me, know I used MBL - the client and 99% of people who watch it have no clue so I guess it will be okay.

After reflecting on this I really want a stedicam of some sort. Perhaps the Glidecam HD2000 I've heard good things about on this forum. Trying to get those handheld shots be smooth was tough and I still don't like the results.

If the client is Happy, then sometimes that's all that matters. Would like to see some more work from you, keep going!!
