Direct-to-HDD recording

Despite doing a pretty extensive search on this forum, I have been unable to find an answer to a specific question that I have in mind.

1. Can I use any decent external hard disk (not Firestore) with firewire (400/800) running at 7200rpm (atleast) to record (not 'dump' from a P2 card) directly to from an HVX202 in 1080/24pA?

Help me out, please.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, ProfessorU, for your response. How I wish I could use one because Firestore and P2 cards are so expensive! :(

Why would Panasonic be interested in letting you record directly to harddrive via usb or firewire?

They wouldn't - 'cause then they wouldn't be selling nearly as many P2 cards as they have.

I sure wish they would, though.

Well, you can't really say people got into this camera not knowing that they'd be stuck paying near $1000 for media of whatever size. Plus solid state has SOLID right in the name. Nothing moves. Jiggle your HDD around while you write to it and see what happens.

The HVX200 plus media was a good deal when I bought it, and the deal keeps getting better as new cards are released. I can see myself shooting with this cam when I'm using 128GB cards.
