Direct to HD

I think I read that the XL2 has software available to record directly to a computer HD. Has anyone done this? Is it available for the mac? Has anyone used the FS-3 - 4 option? Did you mount it on the camera or on your belt? Canon has a nice $300 rebate available if you buy a Firestore with a camera. The JVC setup with the swapable HD unit coupled to the back of the camera seems awesome in concept and execution, what a shame there aren't similar options for the XL2 or DVX cameras.

The software currently works only on Windows XP over Firewire. The XL2 and DVX are SD cameras, so they can't output HD.

As far as the HD JVC stuff goes, it's not alone. The new HVX from Panasonic writes to special cards in HD and Canon may have something soon (if they want to stay in the game). HD isn't the only thing to consider. The feel and other features of the camera usually dictate its overall quality. For example the Sony FZ-1 has non-pro audio (no XLR) and supposedly noisy images.
 
I did a bit of searching for something like this when I got my XL2, and I came across BTVPro.

It's not as full featured as something like DVRack (or so I assume, I've never used it). But if all you're looking to do is capture video to your hard drive, then this is a decent solution.
