Direct dump from SD card to USB drive possible?

Hi all! Quick question... Is it possible for the HMC150 to transfer footage already recorded on the SD card into an off-the-shelf portable USB drive connected directly to the camera?

I'm not talking about recording footage live into the USB drive. I mean footage that's already in the SD card being dumped into the USB drive without the use of a laptop computer. Does anyone know if this is at all possible?

Thanks!

Yes, but only if you're using a USB On-The-Go drive. The HMC150 doesn't have a "host" mode, so the drive would have to have its own host mode.

If Panasonic could get that 'Host Mode' working with a simple firmware fix, oh baby, that would be the best.

I could do my trip next year and not need to bring my Acer One. Two 500GB portable drives and I would be set.

I could even live with the camera itself not supplying the power for the drives.

How long do you go without being able to dump your footage? Would it be impractical just to buy way more cards?

Cards are cheap, and they hold tons of footage. And you don't need a whole laptop, USB on-the-go enclosures are cheap cheap cheap. You could buy one for $9 probably; put your own drive in there and then you have a battery-powered offload station that fits in a shirt pocket.

Having working in the embedded electronics industry, and having written USB driver code myself, I can tell you that is not a simple firmware fix. The USB chipset used may not even support it.

Good to know. This would come in extremely handy for making a copy of the footage and handing the drive off to a client, but still keeping the SD card myself. Thanks for the info! :bath:

Barry can you be more specific about this enclosure? I am not finding anything usb on the go, which says it can be host under $140 (with a 80gb drive)... Especially with its own power... ?

Thanks!

update: here is something with the sd card reader in it... http://www.directron.com/ndrives.html?gsear=1

I went through a bunch of 'em back when the HVX first came out, I probably bought like four. I can't find the cheapest one that I found back then, but it probably wasn't $9 with the battery, I think the cheap non-battery enclosures were like $9, I think the cheap battery-powered ones were more like $25. But still, they weren't much at all. Then again, those were IDE drive enclosures, all the ones out now seem to be SATA.

Well, here's one, $33.88 and battery-powered and USB-OTG, and has the SD card slot:

Seems pretty ideal as a portable offload station for an HMC150 owner wanting direct-to-drive offloading. Of course I haven't used it so I don't actually have a recommendation, this just popped up from some googling.

Thanks... That's the kinda features I was looking for... there are to many regular enclosures out there to sift through.

Very much ideal...I may try this one or something alike.

Can you modify file names with these devices? If not how do you prevent overriding your files since the 150 outputs the same folder/file names on each card?
