Digital Rangefinder?

So I see these on film cameras all the time, and Red Rock Micro is coming out with one for their microRemote at some point, so I've been thinking there must be a DIY version of this out there somewhere. I've seen digital measuring devices at Lowes and was wondering if anyone has thought of a way to strap one of these on the camera rig and somehow use it to pull focus. To have your focus puller knowing exactly the distance would be a nice addition.

Film makers use sonic ones $10k (see shane hurlburt)

The red dot lasers are used for marking up a scene but not during the shot because..

a red dot ruins your footage, and can annoy (damage?) the talent if it goes in their eyes

as for the RR , initially it looked to be sonic, but the latest vid looks like a red dot - making it useless?

Of course most DSLR lenses, especially off brand primes with adapters, the distance markings bear little resemblence to reality so cant be used - youd have to measue and mark your FF

Really I dont know why the cine ones cost $10k - maybe its like response

Best get down to your hardware store and try some

Some of the cheaper ones might have accuracy issues, these really should be three digit products. I've never seen one for $10k, that doesn't sound realistic to me unless it does something else, like interface with other electronic systems.

But yes, people have thought of that, and have done it for quite some time.

I'd be interested in one of the 3 digit ones, but can't seem to find one anywhere. I'm surprised that someone's not already making them at this level. RedRock, Zacuto? Strange.
