Panasonic monitor

Hey on and off the subject. who makes a good middle of road monitor arm. I'd like to try a lillput 7, Need to find what battery, but that shouldnt be to hard. But I'd like a middle of the road arm. That solid enough to handle shoulder brace action.

Alex,

You are a genius. I was just about to ask a bunch of questions when I went back to the photo and you already answered them all.

It does look very good. The only question for me will be sorting out which battery system I want to go with.
This will be extra weight on the back of a BT-LH80 if its on an arm, but I'm not sure I want any battery on it with an arm anyway and it seems you have thought of that by adding the 12V power out.

Would I assume that you need to choose the battery you want it configured for upfront? No changing in the field?

Is this whole unit slated for June '08 or just the BP-U60?

Is the date on the unit in the photo the date for release?

If so could you buy one for use with Panasonic batteries now and switch to BP-U60 when it become available?

Also i notice that there is a "charge" light on the side.... This isn't a charger also is it!!

Lenny, we are finishing testing, and also will be sending a unit to a beta tester this coming week. The 7.2v versions (Panasonic, Canon, Sony "L") will be available soon, in a few weeks. It is a TC200 charger body, that is why you see "charge" lettering. The production units will get a new paint job. The LEDs show individual state of charge for each of the two batteries, starting with solid green for the fully charged, blinking green, blinking red, and solid red for discharged indication.
The BP-U60 version will be ready later as we just finished designing the BP style battery plates, and are expecting them to arrive some time in May or June. As with the chargers, you order a specific configuration for your battery. If you decide to change a plate, you need to send the unit here, it takes 1-2 days.

Alex,

Do I understand then that it doesn't actually charge, that's just left over on the body?

Might even be gone by a production model.

I was going to ask if it sliced bread!
How many watts is the BT-LH80W - 15W?
I read 1.5 Amps as i recall which would mean 18W

When you are ready to adapt this to BP-U60's would you also be ready to do the same on the TC400? so I could do both and just switch over altogether?

BTW as a general question on BT-LH80W - Does it come with an A/C adapter, and if not, what do you guys use?

It has nothing to do with charging. It shares its metal enclosure design with another product - TC200 charger. As far as bread slicing, this feature is not implemented yet. May be after the NAB :-)

Lenny on the AC adapter thing - it doesnt come with one but there are a good number of AC to XLR 12V converters. I picked one up at trew for about $100.

Thanks Greg & Barry for your input and thoughts on this monitor. It definately looks like the way to go.

I'm looking forward to the Dolgin power supply. If I understand things correctly, they are in the process of making the panasonic batteries able to power the panasonic monitor. Is there an ETA on delivery? I didn't find anything on their site...

Also, what are your thoughts on using this as a color grade monitor back in the "studio"? I'm looking for something that I can use in the field with my HVX, and then use with my laptop for color grading work that I do in Color.

One other question- the HD-SDI option, is that something that you can add at a later time, or do you have to get it when you get the monitor?

I'd like to have that option, as I am starting to do more work with the HPX, and other HD-SDI cameras, but right now this monitor would be mostly for my own use with the HVX.

Jeff, What power supply did you get?
I did some research last night and it looks like I can get the same one as my Marshall uses (rated for 5Amps which should be more than enough) for $70. Saw some others even cheaper but i don't much about them.

Lenny - I'm using this one. http://www.trewaudio.com/store/product.php?productid=460&cat=58&page=1
Its just the first one that popped up when I typed in "12v xlr ac adapter" or something like that into google. I was in a hurry at the time so it may not be the cheapest or best solution but it works like a champ.

Ryan - I use mine for CC as its the best monitor I have. I feel like it gives me very accurate results but its small size is a pain for CC work. I've found that working with this monitor and a 42" plasma to get an idea of what everything looks like big simultaneously (through a good distribution amp) makes it pretty good. I just adjust the plasma to look as close to the lh80 as possible. The larger plasma is a great client monitor as well letting them look directly at that and I can look directly at the lh80.

Alex,
Thanks for the link and the info. That sounds great to me. :)

Jeff,
Good to know. I was considering getting the new JVC 17" LCD for CC work, but I want something on set for camera op use, and that seemed a little over kill. I'm going to be getting the Matrox MXO so that I can use my 23" Apple LCD with my laptop for color grading, and knowing that the Panny monitor will work as an additional reference will be great!

Barry,
Glad to know that the HD-SDI option can be added at a later time.

Thanks all for your replies! :)

Alex sent me a VDoubler to test. Everything has worked out wonderfully. I'm using it with a Haier 7'' (I know, I know). The only change I made (which I consulted with Alex beforehand to do) was to cut off his standard size 12v end and replace it with the smaller one that ships with the Haier. It's so nice to be able to use the batteries that power the camera instead of a four or five pound lead acid beast. Now I just have to figure out how to mount the VDoubler to the LCD!

Thank you for the report Gavin. I sent Gavin a preproduction piece, it still has the TC200 charger lettering, but it can not charge the batteries ;-)

how heavy is that whole setup? Is there any weight savings with that over a trimpac slipped directly on the back of a LH80?

I used this monitor last week with the Varicam and the focus in red is amazing. However, I must say that the glare is really bad on the monitor, even with a hoodman on it was difficult to see.

As for batteries, AB are heavy and expensive, an amazing alternative and possibly patent infringing are Comer batteries from...China:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
